The HTC One (codenamed and retroactively called M7 ) is a touch screen-based Android smartphone designed, developed and manufactured by HTC. The smartphone was unveiled on February 19, 2013 at press events in New York City and London and is HTC's seventh-seeded smartphone. This is the successor to the company's flagship model of 2012, One X - which is critically acclaimed, but commercially unsuccessful because some marketing efforts are insufficient. To make this device stand out among its competitors, HTC One developed with a major emphasis on unique hardware and software features; which includes a unibody aluminum frame, 1080p full-HD display, dual front-faced stereo speakers, a camera with special image sensor and the ability to automatically generate media montage, the latest version of HTC Sense user experience, BlinkFeed-- news content aggregators and social networking, and an electronic program guide application with the ability to function as a universal remote via an IR blaster located in the device's power button.

Starting March 2013, HTC One was made available to mobile operators and major resellers in at least 181 countries. Production delays caused a staggered release beginning in late March, with release dates in certain markets (such as Asia and North America) pushing until the end of April. However, with around 5 million units sold during the first two months of availability worldwide, HTC declared that One was the most successful launch in the company's history.

HTC One is praised for its industry-quality design, a high-density 468 ppi display, and a high power RMS 2.6 R stereo sound system, and is well-received for its overall performance and a better user experience compared to previous HTC devices.. However, some aspects of the device, such as the photo quality, battery life, and certain elements of the device's operating system, are subjected to scrutiny by critics. The device has received numerous awards and awards, including being named "The Best New Mobile Device" by the GSM Association at Mobile World Congress 2013, and was named the best smartphone of 2013 at the same conference a year later. It was replaced by HTC One (M8) on March 25, 2014.

Histori

Development

Although HTC has developed some of the leading Android devices, such as Dream - the first publicly released Android device, failed to capitalize on the first mover advantage, and have struggled financially in recent years due to increasing market share captured by other vendors. such as Samsung and Apple. In some markets, HTC releases many operator-specific phones and relies heavily on wireless providers to promote its products, a strategy that is unsuccessful in the face of Samsung's powerful marketing and Apple efforts. The company's flagship phone in 2012, One X, received critical acclaim from reviewers, but commercially unsuccessful after Galaxy S III and iPhone 5. In response, the company plans to take a greater risk with their next flagship device to make it stand out amongst its competitors, and also plans to take a more direct role in promoting its products - doubling its marketing budget for 2013.

Details of the new device, code-named "M7", leaked from various sources in the weeks before the official opening. HTC CEO Peter Chou has officially confirmed and briefly revealed prototypes for the new device during a company event on February 1, 2013. The leaked information speculates that the M7 will include a 1080p screen, quad-core processor, a redesigned version of HTC Sense software, and bring characteristic of Butterfly design. M7 is officially introduced under the HTC One product line at a special launch event on February 19, 2013, in New York City and London. HTC originally announced that HTC One will be released worldwide in March 2013 through 185 operators and retailers in 80 countries, making it the largest global launch in the company's history.

Release

Initially HTC announced that One will be released in the UK on March 15th. However, due to the high demand and supply problems (especially around the components used by the camera), HTC announced on March 22 that the device will be "launched in the UK, Germany and Taiwan next week and across Europe, North America and most of Asia-Pacific before the end of April. "In the United Kingdom, online pre-orders are delivered by some operators around the time of the HTC announcement. At the end of April 2013, HTC One was released across major carriers in the United States and Australia, and an open 32 GB version with the network is also available at the HTC web store. In the US, the HTC One 64 GB is exclusively sold by AT & amp; Q. After the delay, HTC North Asia president Jack Tong announced that the company will double its production capacity for the device in mid-May to meet increased demand and competition for the device, and to cover lost sales due to delayed releases. On August 22, 2013, four months after being released by rivals, Verizon Wireless became the last major carrier to release HTC One in the United States.

Along with its silver stock model, HTC One has been offered in three additional colors; black, red, and blue. Exclusive color variants for specific operators and retailers; in Australia, an exclusive black variant for Telstra, while the red variant (released in July 2013) has been exclusive to Phone 4u in the UK and Sprint in the US. The blue variant (released in September 2013) is exclusive to Carphone Warehouse in the UK and Best Buy in the US. The HTC One colored champagne was released at selected European operators in late November 2013.

The special variant coated with 18 carat gold was launched by HTC in October 2013 as part of a collaboration with Goldgenie and Music of Black Origin Awards. Five models produced in limited production; Of the five, one model was awarded to the winner of the "Best Newcomers" category at a ceremony in Glasgow on October 19, and the other was given in a promotional contest. Discussing the partnership, EMEA president HTC Phil Blair explains that "the best artists are always given gold discs to celebrate their success, but today most people listen to music on their phones we want to celebrate that fact. At a price of US $ 4,442 (Â £ 2,750), the HTC One gold is the most expensive product produced in the company's history.

Litigation

In April 2013, Nokia was granted an introductory court order in the Netherlands against STMicroelectronics, which supplied HTC with microphone components for devices containing Nokia's proprietary technology. Although the order is contrary to STM, Nokia still uses commands to publicly accuse HTC of copying technology from its products. HTC will still be able to use the remaining microphone that it obtains in good faith; the offending component is replaced with an alternative version in future production.

In December 2013, HTC One Mini is prohibited from being sold in the United Kingdom as a result of other patent infringement lawsuits by Nokia. While HTC One is also affected by the decision, its sales ban is retained by the court pending an appeal; The judge pointed out that banning HTC One sales would have a negative effect on the company. The case also unintentionally revealed that HTC plans to launch a replacement HTC One in early 2014.

Features

Design

HTC One uses aluminum unibody frames that are sourced from custom-level aluminum; Material selection is intended to give a solid premium impression device compared to smartphones made with plastic shells. Frames are scratched with channels in which the polycarbonate is inserted using a gap injection mold. Polycarbonate forms ribbons around the edges of the device, covering the top and bottom ends, and splits the two backs with two lines, one of which flows around the camera below. Two polycarbonate bands on the back are used to isolate the antenna, while the ring around the camera is used as a loop antenna for near field communications function (NFC) One. In addition to the display there are two pieces of workpiece from aluminum with a tight grille of laser cutter holes that form the speaker grille behind which has two stereo sound speakers; metal volume buttons smoothly overlaid on the left side of the frame. The unibody frame itself requires at least 200 minutes of precision CNC cutting into the machine, and the end result is a solid slate of anodized aluminum, white polycarbonate, and tempered glass with a chamfered, polished edge.

Two capacitive navigation buttons, "Back" and "Home", are located below the screen, flanked by the HTC logo in the center. While other latest HTC devices (such as the One X) use a three-button layout with "Back", "Home" buttons, and "The latest app lock", the HTC designer believes that using only two navigation buttons as opposed to three will reduce the user's confusion. Like other HTC devices that do not have hardware "Menu" keys (as per the revised Android human interface guidelines introduced in 2012, which are no longer in use), apps that have not been updated to reflect newer guidelines show a black "Menu" button bar at the bottom of the screen.

Hardware

HTC One uses 4.7-inch screen, 1080p Super LCD 3 touch screen with 468 ppi pixel density. The back of the device keeps the camera, LED flash, and secondary microphone. At the top of the device there is a 0.14 inch (3.6 mm) headphone jack and power/lock button, which also acts as an infrared blaster. At the bottom is the main microphone and microUSB port for data connection and charging; devices can stream HDMI via microUSB port using MHL.

This device combines 1.6 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 600, SoC ARMv7, with 2 GB of RAM. This chip provides support for LTE networks where they are available. Most of the HTC One models come with 32 or 64 GB internal storage, unupgraded - unlike international models, Chinese and Japanese models including microSD slot and removable back cover. Its internal components are arranged in a pyramid-like layout similar to the HTC Butterfly and HTC Windows Phone 8X with larger components (such as screens and batteries) positioned toward the front and smaller components (such as the motherboard) positioned toward the rear. This internal layout also allows the device to have curved support.

The One audio system incorporates two front-facing BoomSound stereo speakers, Beats Audio software equalizer, and HDR audio recording. The BoomSound stereo system is controlled by two integrated five-volt NXP TFA9887 five-volt circuits incorporating NXP CoolFlux DSP audio, D-class amplifier with current sensing, and DC-to-DC converter to increase the level of micro speaker output up to five times (up to 2.6Ã, W RMS ) without damaging the drivers.

Camera

HTC One is equipped with a 4.0 megapixel rear-facing camera module that contains a special image sensor that is marketed as UltraPixel, which consists of pixels of 2.0 Ã,Âμm size. Most high-end smartphones at the time were released using an 8- or 13-megapixel camera with pixel sizes ranging from 1.4 to 1.0 Âμm, both of which are much smaller than the pixels found on the UltraPixel One sensor. Although these smaller pixel sizes are usually required to ensure that the camera sensor does not interfere with the design of the phone, there is concern that this may result in loss of dynamic range and sensitivity, and also result in poor performance in low light environments. Thus, HTC states that its camera design with larger sensor pixels can improve overall image quality, especially in dimly lit environments. The camera also includes optical image stabilization, and further enhanced with improved Sense camera software and ImageChip 2 image processor.

In September 2013, HTC confirmed a "separate report" of users experiencing purple or red colors with the camera in low light conditions. The company claims that they have worked to fix this problem, and will release fixes in later software updates. The fix was not launched until late 2015, which caused the need to send the device to be physically repaired by HTC.

Operating system and software

HTC One is powered by Android, a Linux-based open source operating system developed by Google. Among other features, this software allows users to maintain a home screen that can contain shortcuts to applications and widgets to display information. Four shortcuts to frequently used applications can be stored on the dock at the bottom of the screen; button in the center of the dock opens the application drawer, which displays a menu that contains all the applications installed on the device. The notification tray that can be accessed by pulling from the top of the screen allows the user to view notifications received from other apps, as well as to enable the "Power Saver" mode of Someone.

The pre-loaded app on HTC One provides access to various Google services, including Google Play, which can be used to download and purchase apps, music, movies and e-books. Other pre-installed apps on HTC One include browsers with Adobe Flash support, Calendar, Contacts, Dropbox, Facebook, FM Radio, Google Chrome for Android, Children Mode, Music, Notes, Polaris Office, SoundHound, Tasks, TuneIn Radio, and Weather (data provided by AccuWeather). The latest app menu, featuring nine newly opened apps on the thumbnail grid, is accessed by double-tapping the Home button, while Google Search is accessed by pressing the old button. Like the previous device in the series, and following the official refusal in Android 3.0, HTC One does not include a "Menu" button. By default, non-specific apps created for Android 3.0 or later feature virtual menu buttons in the black bar at the bottom of the screen; this black bar can be removed in Android 4.2.2 and later if the user chooses to activate the "Menu" button function by pressing the "Home" button for a long time.

HTC One shipped with Android 4.1.2 "Jelly Bean" and version 5.0 of HTC's Sense software suite. Compared to previous versions of software, Sense 5 uses a flat and minimalist visual style with updated icons and strong variants of the Roboto font family. Instead of traditional home screen displays with apps and widgets, Sense 5 defaults to a screen known as BlinkFeed, a news aggregator that displays a grid of headlines scrolling from selected sources (as indicated by Mobiles Republic) and social network content in fashion to Flipboard and live Windows Phone tiles. New content is synced every two hours when connected to a mobile network, but more often when using Wi-Fi. Just above the BlinkFeed screen is the clock that displays the local time and the user's weather forecast; the signature flip clock widget seen on previous HTC devices is replaced by a simpler digital clock for Sense 5. Hundreds of different clock designs by HTC designers, narrowed down to 25, are considered before the final design is selected. Like previous versions of Sense, users can still add or delete pages on the home screen for shortcut housing and application widgets; one page is provided by default, and which pages are displayed by default can be set by the user. However, BlinkFeed will always occupy the leftmost page of the home screen. The app drawer uses a 3x4 grid to display application shortcuts by default, but can still be converted back to the more solid 4x5 grid used by previous versions. Applications can also be sorted into folders in the drawer; a number of preset folders are provided, such as "Google", "Media", "Productivity", "Tools", and pre-loaded apps provided by the wireless operator of the user, if applicable.

The camera app includes a new shooting mode known as Zoe (referring to zoetrope), which captures short videos alongside each captured photo. Individual frames can be saved from clips, while frames can also be used with other editing features such as Sequence Shot (which superimposes multiple frames into a composite image). Photos taken in Zoe mode are also displayed with animated thumbnails in the gallery. The Highlights feature can automatically generate video montages from photos and videos with multiple themes and soundtrack options. The resulting video can be exported, or posted online through the HTC Share service (where they are accessible for 30 days). A television guide app is also provided, which combines remote control functionality via an infrared blaster hidden in the One power button, shows the recommendations supported by Peel, and the ability to display event reminders as stories in BlinkFeed. The updated music app now includes a visualizer and support for the lyrics on the screen. The latest version of the Getting Started feature (as introduced by HTC One X) allows users to make initial setup for their One through a web-based service, while the new Sync Manager allows data to migrate from backup of iOS devices or HTC devices with Android 4.0 and higher. Like all devices in the One series, 25 GB of Dropbox storage is available free for two years. By using NFC, One can also share content between other Android devices compatible with Android Beam, and make mobile payments where compatible systems (such as FeliCa in Japan) are available.

Software revision

In July 2013, HTC began launching upgrades to Android 4.2.2 in a specific region; along with internal changes, it adds a quick settings panel to the notification area, Instagram support for BlinkFeed, auto focus/auto exposure to camera, additional Highlight themes, and optimizes Zoes saved (generates JPG and MP4 static video files instead of saving each frame as a separate image file). This enhancement also adds the ability to show the current percentage of batteries in the status bar, a more consistent behavior for home keys, enables removal of icons from the main display dock, enabling the Home key to function as a "Menu" button that is no longer used in certain applications by pressing old (instead of displaying it in a black bar on the screen), allowing Google Now to be accessed by swiping up from the home button, and adding support for displaying widgets on the lock screen (however, unlike Android stock, only one widget can be placed on the lock screen at a time).

In North America, Android 4.2.2 is available only as software that is loaded on Verizon Wireless' HTC One, because HTC considers 4.2 relatively small on smartphones. In contrast, the North American model should be upgraded directly to Android 4.3, scheduled for release in late September 2013. HTC has previously released Android 4.3 upgrades for the Google Play edition in early August 2013. On September 25, 2013, HTC started launching upgrades, starting with the model which is not locked. In addition to the internal changes introduced by Android 4.3, the update adds the ability to use special soundtracks on Highlight video, and also fixes low-light camera problems introduced by the 4.2.2 upgrade.

In late October 2013, HTC released Sense 5.5 for HTC One, a software revision that added RSS and Google support to BlinkFeed, enabling users to completely disable BlinkFeed, adding tools to create GIF animations, and additional Highlight themes. Shortly after it was revealed on October 31, 2013, HTC confirmed the upcoming Android 4.4.2 release for all HTC One models, starting with the Google Play version, and for models equipped with Sense in January 2014. For version 4.4, HTC introduced a web page that allows users to track progress and release Android upgrade process for their products, and aims to release a 4.4 upgrade for HTC One within 90 days of the release of its source code.

The update for HTC Sense 6.0, as introduced in HTC One (M8), was released in May 2014. This update introduces an updated interface with the latest version of stock apps like BlinkFeed, customizable color themes and fonts, along with the new "Mode Extreme Power Saver ", which limits CPU usage and disables nonessential apps, multitasking services, and sensors to save battery life when it's low; mode only allows access to phone, messaging, email, calendar, and calculator app.

After its launch, HTC is committed to releasing an update for Android 5.0 "Lollipop", again in 90 days since the release of its source code. As per this commitment, HTC plans to release Lollipop at the end of January 2015, but the company missed a deadline due to a bug in the operating system that needs to be handled by Google. Android 5.0 was released to unlock the HTC One model on February 6, 2015. Android 5.0 is the final version of Android that will be available for HTC One models with HTC-supplied firmware, as only models with Google's firmware will receive Android 5.1.

Variant model

Some variants of hardware and software HTC One released in certain regions in 32 GB and 64 GB models. HTC One 801e (M7_U) was released in Taiwan. HTC One 801s (M7_UL) was released in Australia, Hong Kong, and Singapore. HTC One 801n (M7_UL) was released in Europe, Middle East and Africa. HTC One 801n LTE (M7_WLJ, M7_WLV) version, HTC One HTC One HTC6500LVW (M7_WLV) version, LTE and Sprint HTC One (HTC M7_WLS) LTE version was released in North America in only 32 GB models. HTC J One HTL22 is released in Japan, and HTC TD101 802w/d/t in mainland China. The developer edition and the Google Play edition were also released in the US in 32 GB and 64 GB models.

Developer Edition

The HTC One 64 GB Developer Edition was released in limited quantities in the United States, exclusively from the HTC website on April 19, 2013. This variant features an unlocked bootloader, which can be used for custom ROM development and installation. The Developer Edition was also opened for use on GSM and LTE networks from T-Mobile and AT & amp; T; however, it does not support T-Mobile's HSPA AWS-based network.

Google Play edition

On May 30, 2013, HTC announced that Google Play will sell HTC One variant with the Android stock operating system as a Google Experience tool (same as Nexus device). The album was released in the United States on 26th June 2013 along with a similar version of the Galaxy S4. While still carrying Beats Audio support, infrared functionality was initially unavailable, but was enabled by an update to Android 4.3.

Chinese variant

The HTC One variant was launched for release in China in late April 2013 with HTC TD101 802w for China Unicom, HTC TD101 802d for China Telecom, and HTC TD101 802t for China Mobile. Unlike international versions, Chinese models have a removable back cover, revealing a microSD slot for storage expansion and dual SIM card slots. Complementing this feature, a special edition with Wang Leehom's back cover was also released. HTC stated that it can insert the SD card slot in the Chinese model because its radio hardware does not take up as much internal space as the international model.

Japanese variant

The HTC One variant known as HTC J One (HTL22) or One J was announced for Japanese operator au by KDDI in May 2013. J One is similar to the Chinese version, and includes support for FeliCa's NFC based payment system.

Reception

Critical reception

HTC One released for lucrative reviews. At 2013 Mobile World Congress, it won the "Best New Mobile Device" award from the GSM Association, and received the "Best Phone" and "Best in Show" award from TechRadar . Once released, HTC One also received the "Editor's Choice Gold" award from AnandTech . In August 2013, HTC One was awarded "Best European Advanced Smartphone 2013-2014" by the European Imaging and Sound Association, and at the 2013 T3 Gadget Awards, HTC One won "Gadgets of the Year", "Phone of the Year", and T3 Design Award. At Mobile World Congress 2014, it was named the best smartphone of 2013 during the Global Mobile Awards.

Walt Mossberg of The Wall Street Journal liked One over its nearest rival, the Samsung Galaxy S4, considering the One to be "more attention-grabbing and reasonably competent" than it is. In a later review conducted 4 months later in August 2013, Zeni Epstein's Boy Genius Report also favored One over the Galaxy S4, stating that "between [Galaxy S4, Moto X] and the rest of the phones Android on the market today, HTC One is in a class of its own ". Epstein cites differences in hardware and industrial design construction, as well as various features of Sense 5.0; one example included an IR blaster and a high-quality TV app on One compared to S4.

New York Times technology columnist David Pogue praised the attention to detail in its design, along with its performance, camera, and display quality; and think of it as "the most beautiful [Android phone] you've ever seen". However, Pogue criticizes sustainable use of HTC on the Sense user interface, physical navigation button settings, the inability of users to expand their storage or replace batteries, and the "usual [one day] 4G LTE Android" battery life. In conclusion, Pogue stated that "You can quibble with overlay software, but it will be hard to imagine a more impressive phone hardware."

The Verge gave HTC One 8.3 of 10; Regardless of the position of the power button and navigation buttons, which are considered difficult to reach, the hardware design is praised for having a "really unique and somehow still low" display, while its 1080p screen is considered one of the sharpest displays on a smartphone - though not bright enough to be seen properly in direct sunlight. In combination with stereo speakers, One is considered a great phone to view videos and play games, while call quality is sufficient. With regard to performance, HTC One is considered a "very impressive phone across the board" because of its high value on various benchmark tests. His camera received mixed reviews; while it has better low-light performance than its advertised rivals, One's photographs were criticized for being "soft and flabby" due to extensive post-processing and just looking relatively good at the smaller size that services such as Facebook and Instagram. The Zoe feature is considered unique and useful, but the HTC Share service has been selected because "like Vine, unless your clip lasts only a few months and no one will use it." The One was also criticized for its "clear average" battery life, and for some "non intuitive" design changes made by HTC for Android UI.

Wired Michael Calore praises HTC One's "really beautiful" and "seamless" design, and considers the quality of its internal speakers as the best of all smartphones so far. The screen is considered sharp with "faithful" color reproduction, but too dim for use in bright sunlight. The camera is filtered to produce images that do not have the sharpness of its competitors, but the camera software itself is still listed for advanced options and Zoe shooting modes. The HTC One user interface is considered cleaner and closer to the Android stock design than previous releases, while BlinkFeed is considered "slick" and "useful", but "away from the original". Some HTC changes to the Android UI were criticized, including a "narrow" on-screen keyboard, and deviations from the three-button keypad layout commonly used by other manufacturers. Calore also criticized HTC for mobile phone shipments with Android 4.1.2 when Android 4.2 was released three months before its official announcement. These factors, along with the unsatisfactory battery life experienced by Calore, propelled it to give the HTC One rating 7.0 out of 10.

Industrial design and camera One are also praised by both CNET (which gives phones 4 out of 5) and PC Magazine (which gives the phone an excellent rating); However, PC Magazine criticizes the inability to do digital pruning and enlarge pictures taken with the camera, along with a non-removable "bloatware" app added by AT & amp; T in his version. CNET highlights BlinkFeed due to a lack of source content and for not being able to use custom sources or turn it off entirely, but praising updates for Sense and TV apps. Again, "bloatware" is added by Sprint and AT & amp; T is criticized, but HTC operator app placements in their separate folders in the app drawer are recorded.

Sales

On May 23, 2013, The Wall Street Journal reported that HTC One sales have reached about 5 million since its launch in March. In comparison, the iPhone 5 sold 5 million units in the first three days of availability and the Galaxy S4 sent 10 million units in its first month of availability. Although not quoting further figures, Mark Woodward, president of HTC North America, considers HTC One's launch as the most successful in the company's history. Responding to its success, HTC released two other HTC One-branded devices throughout 2013 that extend the features and design elements of the device into other form factors, including HTC One Mini mid-range, and HTC One Max phablet.
