src: i.ytimg.com

The fourth generation iPad (marketed as iPad with Retina display , colloquially referred to as iPad 4 ) is a tablet computer manufactured and marketed by Apple Inc. Compared to its predecessor, the third generation iPad, the fourth-generation iPad retains the Retina Display but features new and improved components such as the Apple A6X chip and Lightning connector, introduced on September 12, 2012. It ships with iOS 6.0, which provides a platform for audio-visual media including electronic books, magazines, movies, music, computer games, presentations and web content. Like the iPad 2 and the third generation iPad, has been supported by five major iOS releases, in this case iOS 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. iOS 11, released on September 19, 2017, has no support for fourth generation iPad due to limitations hardware.

It was announced at a media conference on October 23, 2012 as the fourth generation of the iPad line, and was first released on November 2, 2012, in 35 countries, and then through December in ten other countries including China, India and Brazil. The third generation was suspended after the fourth announcement, after just seven months of general availability.

This device is available with black or white windshield and various connectivity and storage options. The storage size options include 16 GB, 32 GB, 64 GB, and 128 GB; connectivity options are available only Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Mobile with LTE capabilities.

The fourth-generation iPad received positive reviews and was praised for its hardware improvements as well as the Retina display, which was also featured on its predecessor. Furthermore, the benchmarks reveal that the fourth-generation iPad is capable of performing tasks that depend on the CPU twice as fast as its predecessor. During the first weekend of sales, the combined sum of 3 million fourth-generation iPads and iPad Minis were sold.

History

Rumors about the next generation iPad appear soon after the release of third generation iPad. At that time some people speculated that the next iPad that was released would have a smaller size. Further speculation surfaced in July 2012 when DigiTimes, with the help of an unnamed source, claimed that Apple made a small revision for the upcoming iPad and scheduled its release for the end of 2012. On October 16, 2012, Apple announced a media event scheduled for October 23. at the California Theater in San Jose, California. The company did not announce in advance about the event, but it is widely expected to be about the iPad Mini. Photographic images of the device's dock connector and front camera appear shortly before a media event.

At a media event, Apple CEO Tim Cook introduced a new version of iBooks and a new generation of MacBook Pro, Mac Mini and iMac before launching the fourth generation iPad and iPad Mini lower class. During the launch, Apple stated that the fourth-generation iPad will be available for online pre-order in selected countries starting from October 26th. On November 2nd, Apple released Wi-Fi device models in 35 countries across Europe, East Asia and North America. Mobile models released in-store a few weeks after the initial release of the device.

The release of the fourth-generation iPad led to the cessation of its predecessor, which infuriated many third-generation iPad users. In response, Apple extended its 14 day return policy to 30 days. ITProPortal notes that, since the prices of both models are the same, consumers who buy third-generation iPads within this timeframe are effectively allowed to swap discontinued devices for fourth-generation models.

On January 29, 2013, Apple announced and scheduled the launch of the 128 GB iPad 4th generation variant. It was released on February 5, 2013.

After the iPad Air announcement on October 22, 2013, fourth-generation iPad sales stopped. The fourth-generation iPad was reintroduced on March 18, 2014, after the discontinuation of the iPad 2. To make the low-end device reintroduction to the Air iPad, the price was cut by 20% of the original launch price. On October 16, 2014, the fourth-generation iPad was stopped for iPad Air 2; iPad Air took the place as an entry-level iPad at that time.

Features

Software

The fourth-generation iPad ships with iOS 6.0 and later, iOS 7. It can act as a hotspot with multiple operators, share its Internet connection over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB, and also access the Apple App Store, a digital distribution platform app for iOS. This service allows users to browse and download apps from the iTunes Store developed with Xcode and the iOS SDK and published through Apple. From App Store, GarageBand, iMovie, iPhoto, and iWork app (Page, Keynote, and Number) are available.

The iPad comes with several pre-installed apps, including Siri, Safari, Mail, Photos, Videos, Music, iTunes, App Store, Maps, Notes, Calendar, Game Center, Photo Booth, and Contacts. Like all iOS devices, iPad can sync content and other data with a Mac or PC using iTunes, though iOS 5 and later can be managed and backed up without a computer. Although this tablet is not designed to make phone calls over cellular networks, users can use a built-in headset or speakers and microphone to make phone calls over Wi-Fi or mobile using a VoIP app, such as Skype. The device has dictation apps, using the same speech recognition technology as the iPhone 4S. Users talk and what type of iPad they say on the screen, even though the iPad must have an internet connection available (via Wi-Fi or mobile network) because of the dependence of this feature on the Apple servers to translate the speech.

The fourth-generation iPad has an optional iBooks app, featuring book and other ePub format content downloaded from iBookstore. Some major book publishers include Penguin Books, HarperCollins, Simon & amp; Schuster, and Macmillan are committed to publishing books for the device. Despite being a direct competitor both Amazon Kindle and Barnes & amp; Noble Nook, Amazon.com and Barnes & amp; Noble offers e-reader app for iPad.

The iPad's 4th generation, unlike its predecessor, the 3rd generation iPad, powered by iOS 10; However, it was announced at Apple WWDC 2017 that the 4th generation iPad (along with iPhone 5/5C) will not support iOS 11. iOS 10.3.3 is the latest iOS version to include support for this device.

Hardware

The device has an Apple A6X SoC consisting of 32-bit Apple dual-core CPU running on 1.4 GHz and quad-core PowerVR SGX554MP4 GPU, 1 GB of RAM. It also comes with a 5 megapixel rear camera that is capable of recording 1080p video; and a front facing 720p HD camera designed for FaceTime. The device has a 9.7 "(diagonal) screen with a resolution of 2.048 by 1.536 (QXGA) generating 3.1 million pixels, this gives the pixel density of 264 ppi.Pix total pixels used in the fourth view - the iPad generation is four times that of the iPad 2 - provides even scaling of previous models.

Like all previous iPhone and iPad hardware generation, there are four buttons and one button on the fourth generation iPad. With the device in its portrait orientation, this is the "home" button on the face of the device at the bottom of the screen that returns the user to the home screen, the wake/sleep button at the top edge of the device, and two buttons on the top right side of the device performing the volume up/down function, below is a switch whose function varies according to device settings, generally works well to switch devices to or out of silent mode or to lock/unlock screen orientation. Externally, the fourth-generation iPad is identical to its predecessor apart from the difference between the dock connector used and the manufacturer's changes that produce the screen. In addition, the only Wi-Fi version weighs 652 grams while the mobile model weighs 662 grams - 2 grams heavier than its predecessor respectively. The screen responds to another sensor: ambient light sensor to adjust the screen brightness and 3-axis accelerometer to sense orientation and toggle between portrait and landscape modes. Unlike iPhone and iPod Touch built-in apps, which work in three orientations (portrait, left-landscape and landscape-right), the built-in iPad app supports screen rotation in all four orientations, including upside-down. As a result, the device has no intrinsic "authentic" orientation; only the relative position of the changed home button.

These tablets are produced with or without the ability to communicate over cellular networks. All models can connect to a wireless LAN via Wi-Fi. The fourth generation iPad is available with internal flash memory of 16, 32, 64 or 128Ã, GB, with no expansion options. Apple sells "camera connection kits" with SD card readers, but can only be used to transfer photos and videos.

Audio playback from the fourth generation iPad has a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. Without third party software can play the following audio formats: HE-AAC, AAC, Protected AAC, MP3, MP3 VBR, Audible format (2, 3, 4, AEA, AAX, and AAX), ALAC, AIFF, and WAV.

The iPad uses a rechargeable lithium-ion polymer (LiPo) battery that can hold 11,560 mAh. Batteries are made in Taiwan by Simplo Technology (60%) and Dynapack International Technology (40%). The iPad is designed to be charged with a relatively high current of 2 amps using a 12 W USB power adapter and a Lightning connector. While it can be charged by older USB ports from the computer, this is limited to 500 milliamps (0.5 amps). As a result, if iPad is used when powered by a computer, iPad might fill up very slowly, or not at all. The high-powered USB port found in computers and newer accessories provides full charging capability. Apple claims that the battery can provide up to 10 hours of video, audio playback, or web surfing on Wi-Fi, 9 hours of web surfing via cellular connection, or one month on standby. Like other rechargeable batteries, iPad batteries lose capacity over time. However, iPad battery can not be replaced by the user. In a program similar to the iPod and iPhone battery replacement program, Apple promised to replace iPads that have no electric charge with updated units for a fee. During the battery replacement process, user data is not stored/moved, and the repaired or updated units are equipped with new casing. Warranty on updated units may vary between jurisdictions.

Accessories

Smart Cover, introduced with the iPad 2, is a screen protector magnetically attached to the iPad's face. The cover has three folds allowing it to be converted into a cradle, also held together by a magnet. Smart Cover can also take another position by folding it. Smart Covers have a microfiber pad cleansing the front of the iPad, and wakes the unit when the cover is removed. It comes in five colors both polyurethane and leather which is more expensive.

Apple offers several other accessories, most of which are adapters for the exclusive Lightning connector, the only port in addition to the headphone jack. The dock holds the iPad at an angle, and has a dock connector and an audio line-out port. The iPad can use a Bluetooth keyboard that also works with Mac and PC. The iPad can be charged by a standalone power adapter ("charger") compatible with iPod and iPhone, and a 12-watt charger is included.

Reception

The fourth-generation iPad received excellent reviews from critics and commentators. The reviews by Gareth Beavis from TechRadar praised the device for high resolution Retina Display, which TechRadar wrote was "... one of the most impressive we've seen on tablets to date. "However, reviewers also wrote that the screen" does not have a 'punch' seen on the Super AMOLED screen that is seen on devices like the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. " This review also praised the iPad interface because of its simple design and easy-to-use layout. In addition, other aspects, such as the updated iPad and SoC design are recorded and praised in the review. Critically, Beavis notes that the iPad can still be quite hot under moderate usage, but not as far as it looks on the third generation iPad. Stevens' team from Engadget praised Retina Display and labeled it as the best screen available on tablets. Benchmarks and tests conducted by Engadget resulted in Stevens concluding that the fourth-generation iPad is Apple's fastest mobile device available, surpassing the "record" held by the iPhone 5 for a brief period.

Benchmark tests performed by SlashGear concluded that the SoC of the fourth generation iPad is capable of performing tasks that depend on the CPU more than twice as fast as the third-generation iPad. A series of benchmark tests conducted on graphics performance from fourth generation iPad by Anandtech resulted in the device achieving the highest score compared to other consumer mobile devices, including Samsung Galaxy S III, Nexus 10 and third generation iPad. The fourth generation iPad's performance improvements vary between tests, but improvements are still evident. Furthermore, the battery longevity test performed by the same organization shows that the fourth generation iPad battery lasts longer than its predecessor. However, the updated iPad 2 battery lasts longer than the fourth generation iPad.

Commercial revenue

On the first weekend of sales of iPad Mini and iPad fourth generation, Apple reported that they sold a total of 3 million units. TechRadar notes that the first weekend sales figures for fourth-generation iPads are lower than the corresponding numbers for third-generation iPads, which sold 3 million units on their first weekend. Such further reports and analyzes from David Hsieh, a technology analyst, show that the iPad mini sells better than the fourth-generation iPad. Despite the decline in sales, Apple's share price, in a direct response to the released figures, rose 1.4% to $ 584.62 on Nov. 5.

Criticism

In a review of improvements made by iFixit, the fourth-generation iPad scored 2 of the 10 (10 easiest to fix) due to the use of adhesives to install components. However, reviewers noted that some components such as screens and batteries can be easily removed for replacement.
