Development
The series is updated for the fourth season on January 8, 2017, earlier than usual for this series. Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said this, "The great thing about our friends at The CW and Mark Pedowitz who chose the show as early as possible has allowed us to start making schedules for next season." In May 2017 it was announced that Aaron Helbing would not return as executive producer for the fourth season, with only Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg, Sarah Schechter and Todd Helbing returning from the previous season. Todd Helbing and Kreisberg are scheduled to serve as season guides. In November 2017, Kreisberg was suspended from his role as executive producer and showrunner on The Flash on allegations of sexual harassment. At the end of the month, he was fired, with his name eventually removed from credit of all the events he was working on. In addition, Berlanti will take on additional responsibilities that work with Helbing to co-showrun the season.
Write
In March 2017, Kreisberg insisted that the main villain for the fourth season will not be a speedster, like the previous three seasons. Executive producers Aaron and Todd Helbing also mentioned that there would be less time travel this season, with Aaron saying, "We love playing with different time lines and time periods and future and past." For now, I think we will focus on the moment. "In June 2017, Clifford DeVoe/Thinker reportedly became the main antagonist of the season. He first hinted at the third season episode of "Abra Kadabra" when the titular villain named him among Flash's biggest enemies, and again at the end of the "Finish Line" season when Savitar mentioned DeVoe's face but stated that Flash had not dealt with him yet. In the San Diego Comic-Con panel series, the speculation was confirmed, with Todd Helbing saying, "With three consecutive Speedster, this year is the fastest man living with the fastest living mind." He added that the authors "made a conscious effort this year to get rewarding results for the fun".
Regarding the possibility of Wally West taking the Flash coat in Barry's absence, Keiynan Lonsdale said that "This is not something on my radar I feel as if there are so many stories to tell and Wally has so much to do.. We need to look how these characters realistically achieve their goals. "With the action taking six months after the third season, Kid Flash and Vibe are left to protect Central City, with Carlos Valdes saying" a team of like gripping straws to keep the city together,... there's a feeling round among the remaining members is not the same without Barry... So remembering it, Cisco did everything to get his friends back. "Valdes also confirmed the return of Cisco's lighter jokes. Candice Patton explains Iris West's bigger role in the Flash Team as "a way to distract him," adding that "[Iris] is forced to face the anger and hatred and abandonment with a focus on Central City's protection... We see a very different Iris, almost very loud Iris. "Kreisberg also hinted at some major growth for Iris this season, and noted that" the inaugural season is about Iris and Cisco, not Barry ".
In July 2017, Sterling Gates, comic writer DC Comics, joined as a staff member writing the fourth season. On the press tour of the TV Critics Forum in August 2017, Pedowitz stated that the fourth season of The Flash was "going to try to find lightness... from Barry Allen from the first two seasons," and said the show was likely " done with Speedster villain ". Later in the month, Kreisberg confirmed the return of Harry Wells from Earth-2, saying that "season 4 for Harry really realizes what he lost in his life and what he needs to be a better person, more complete, and so on. he's going to be on an epic emotional journey this season associated with Thinker's plan, "in addition to confirming the introduction of the new version of the Wells character.
In September 2017, Helbing noted, "There's a lot of love in the air this season," and compares the reunion of Barry and Iris with "someone who will go to war for six months and come back.It is much experienced Iris that Barry does" , and it's really [about] the fun and emotional component of making time when they are not together. " Helbing also explained that Speed ââForce "let [Barry] handle all the baggage [of the last three seasons]." When he comes out, he's like leaving everything behind. " That month, Kreisberg also confirmed that Barry and Iris will be married this season, while also revealing that the couple will go to couples therapy because "[they] remain inadvertently clashed because [both are] accustomed to being responsible, and so they will leave.. to overcome it. "He added," They both are with the therapist are some of the funniest things we've ever done on this show, but it also leads to the deepening of their relationship. "
Casting
The lead cast of Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Danielle Panabaker, Carlos Valdes, Keiynan Lonsdale, Tom Cavanagh, and Jesse L. Martin return from previous seasons like Barry Allen/Flash, Iris West, Caitlin Snow/Killer Frost, Cisco Ramon/Vibe, Wally West/Kid Flash, Harrison Wells, and Joe West, respectively. Cavanagh will portray Harry Wells from Earth-2 early in the season, without ruling out the possibility of introducing another incarnation of Wells character later. Tempting the arrival of the new Harrison Wells, Cavanagh said, "We'll start with Harry and then find a way, I think, to try and get a different version of Wells there, whether it's the Harry version or something else, as the seasonal gap presents itself." back from earlier in the series is Jessica Camacho as Gypsy. It was revealed that Tom Felton, who joined the player as Julian Albert in the third season, would not be a regular series in the fourth season, and that there was no plan for him to show up. Julian's absence will be handled "pretty quickly - there's a reason why she's no longer with the team," Helbing said. In the first season, it was revealed that Julian had returned to London. Kreisberg also confirmed that he had held back Violett Beane's return plan as Jesse Quick due to the high speedster on the show, but did not rule out a return in the future. Beane eventually appears as Jesse on the episode "Luck Be a Lady". Britne Oldford, who previously appeared as Shawna Baez/Peek-a-Boo in the first season and the web series of The Chronicles of Cisco, repeated his role in the inaugural season.
In July 2017, Neil Sandilands was announced to play Clifford DeVoe, a metahuman genius who started a season-long battle with Flash to fix everything he considers wrong with humanity; while Kim Engelbrecht was announced as The Mechanic, DeVoe's right hand and a very intelligent engineer who designed the device for him; and Danny Trejo as Hunters, a bounty hunter from Earth-19 and father of Gypsy. Also in June, the series sought a role that "had to put the visual effects department for the exam", with a role that later revealed to be Ralph Dibny/Elongated Man, a metahuman with the ability to stretch his body to a super-human length and size. Hartley Sawyer plays a role in a recurring role in July as a fast-talking private detective who after discovering his ability will help the Flash Team solve one of Middle East's greatest mysteries. This character was previously mentioned in the first season, as one of fourteen people who apparently died from the explosion of accelerator particles. The following month, Katee Sackhoff is announced in the repetitive role of Amunet Black/Blacksmith, which operates the underground black market of metahuman supervillains.

He also highlighted the setting of the Thinker "as an Alchemy-like villain who manipulates malicious metas into the Flash path as part of some kind of masterplan", saying "The Flash is a series that really works best as procedural, with the team finding creative ways to bring down Villains of the Week. "
The whole season received negative reviews from critics. While reviewing the final, Jesse Schedeen of IGN gave the episode "We Are The Flash" ranked 4.6/10, arguing that, "Equally problematic with this year's series, it's disappointing but not surprising to see Flash < span> ' the fourth season ends on such a bland note.
