The Toyota Avalon is a mid-size (previously full-sized) car manufactured by Toyota in the United States and Japan, and is Toyota's largest front-wheel drive sedan in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and the Middle East. It was also manufactured in Australia from April 2000 to June 2005, when it was replaced in November 2006 by Toyota Aurion. Avalon's first production rolled off the TMMK assembly line in Georgetown, Kentucky, in September 1994. The second generation model was released in the United States and Japan in 1999.
Toyota marketed the Avalon as a substitute for Toyota Cressida, a model that was discontinued for the American market in 1992. While Cressida is a mid-sized top-class rear-wheel-drive car with a straight-six engine, the Avalon is a front wheel. -drive, powered by V6 engine. In recent years, there has been a lot of overlap with its platform counterparts, Toyota Camry V6 and Lexus ES, although the third-generation Avalon is distinguished by offering extra legroom. For its fourth generation, Avalon was introduced on a platform shared with Lexus ES.
In 2013, Toyota Avalon is available in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, South Korea, and the Middle East.
Avalon is the legendary island featured in the Arthurian legend.

Generasi pertama (XX10; 1994-1999)
Avalon is a new model introduced in February 1994 at the Chicago International Auto Show and launched in late 1994 for the 1995 model. Built in the same plant as the Camry, Avalon was developed under the 299T program from 1990 to 1994 and is based on the Camry XV10 platform which is expanded with a 3.0 liter VM engine that makes 192Ã, hp (140Ã, kW) and 210Ã, lb? Ft (285Ã, N? M) torque. With nearly 121 cuÃ, ft (3.426Ã, l) interior space, Avalon is the cleanest six-passenger car of the Japanese manufacturer marketed in America, though three inches shorter than the Mazda 929 and 11 inches shorter than the Dodge Intrepid.
Avalon is available with a bench for the front seat for six passengers, and the column shifter is the first such feature in American Toyota cars since 1982 Corona. The XL model is similar to the LE model of other Toyota vehicles, and the XLS model is similar to other Toyota XL models. Traction control is optional. For the 1997 model year ABS being standard, the power rating increased to 200 hp (150 kW), and torque increased to 214 lb ft (290 N m). In 1997 for the 1998 model, mid-cycle renewals were introduced with minor updates on front and back fascia. Also for 1998, the Avalon structure was modified to improve safety while the front seat side airbags became standard.
The first generation Avalon is also sold in Japan (vehicles made in the United States and exported to Japan) as a right-hand drive model, and exclusive to Toyopet Store. In Japan, it is the largest front-wheel drive sedan at Toyopet Store, and sold beside the front engine, the Toyota Celsior in the back, and available at 3.0 and 3.0G levels, with the "Coach Edition" available as an option beginning in late 1997 (equivalent to the 1998 model). In Japan this car is considered a luxury car because its exterior dimension puts it in the category of "big car" according to Japanese Government dimension regulations and engine displacement requiring expensive annual road tax.
Australia Australia (Australia) 2000-2005)
In 1999, Toyota shifted the old equipment to Avalon to Toyota Australia, which launched the Avalon as an "all-new" model in June 2000. The new Avalon Australia has a body identical to the original 1994 Avalon. The Australian model is built on the outskirts of Melbourne, Altona, made on both sides of the right (for Australia, New Zealand, and parts of Asia), as well as a left-hand drive for the Middle East. Camry is also made in this factory. Avalon performed poorly in Australia; critics call the car "boring", and its sales are low. Avalon is a front-wheel drive and is available only as a 3.0-liter V6 sedan and automatic transmission. Conversely, the intended rivals, Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore, are rear-wheel drive and offer a wider body style and engine/transmission options.
Toyota originally decided to change Avalon's name as Centaur to the Australian market, named after the mythology of the same name. The same name was also used by AHS Centaur , an Australian hospital ship that was torpedoed and drowned by a Japanese submarine during World War II. When Toyota Australia was aware of this before the car launch, they arranged for the Centaur badge to be destroyed and removed from the offending nameplate of all documents and advertisements. As a result, the original "Avalon" name applies to the Australian market.
When Avalon was renewed in 2001 as a "Mark II" (not to be confused with a separate Toyota Mark II), the model range was slightly revised and the new hubcaps/wheels were installed. Marking "Mark III" refers to the facelift model from 2003 to 2005.
Many buyers prefer the Camry-capable V6 than the Avalon, and the 2003 facelift failed to improve sales that were lower than expected, with many criticizing the new front styling. Because of these sales concerns, Toyota Australia marketed it to the taxi fleet, against the Ford Falcon, with a specially developed engine with dual fuel (LPG and gasoline). Avalon production ceased in mid 2005. In November 2006, Toyota introduced its successor, Toyota Aurion (XV40).

Second generation (XX20; 1999-2004)
Second-generation Avalon grows larger in almost everything except the wheelbase. It's still based on a stretched Camry platform powered by a 3.0-liter VM-equipped V6 engine equipped with VVT-i, which is shared with Toyota Sienna, Lexus RX300, Lexus ES, and Toyota. Highlander, produces 210 hp (157 kW) and 220 lb ft (298 N m). torque and paired to 4-speed automatic. The drag coefficient has been reduced to C d = 0.28.
The Avalon is available in two trims: the base XL and the upscale XLS. Standard features include electroluminescent gauges Optitron , ABS 4 ABS wheels, front torso side airbags, and 15 "alloy wheels.Optional is the JBL audio system, navigation system, Vehicle Stability Control and front row seats, allows up to six passengers - the characteristics of a large car. But the central front seat is a tight fit for adult passengers. Double climate control, larger 16 "wheels, and driver and passenger driver seats are also available.
The second generation Avalon also features a built-in 115V AC power inverter, the first car with such features. This is dropped on the third-generation Avalon; however, the Toyota Matrix, Sienna, and Scion models now offer such inverters.
Avalon received a mid-cycle facelift for the 2003 model year, with new grille and headlamps and modified rear lights. Small interior changes include a woodgrain-style steering wheel for XLS, slightly modified gauges, and chrome emblem steering wheel added to XL (only once standard for XLS).
The second-generation Avalon is also exported to the Japanese market as a Toyota Pronard , derived from the French word prÃÆ'Ã'ner for extol, praise, or praise, between 2002 and 2004, replacing the first generation sold as Avalon. Toyota Pronard Japan moved from Toyopet Store and now exclusively to the Vista Store network as the location of the Toyota Netz Store , placed among the larger. Toyota Aristo and Verossa and smaller Altezza. Some of the optional equipment installed in Pronard, to enhance its luxury, is a TEMS ride control technology. Due to bad sales, Toyota does not export third-generation Avalon to Japan; thus, Toyota Pronard has been discontinued.
In the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) frontal accident test, Avalon received a "Good" overall score with "Good" in all six measurable categories.
Third generation (XX30; 2004-2012)
Avalon underwent a redesign for 2005, and was released to the public in January 2005 International Auto Show of North America. It went on sale in February 2005. Toyota reportedly cut the development time of Avalon's production down from 29.5 months to 18 months. Third generation Avalon is not sold in Europe or Japan.
Third generation Avalon is bigger than previous versions, with Calty styling and drag coefficient of C d = 0.29; Avalon also became the first Toyota to use wiper blade design. The redesign drops the choice of the bench front seats, a feature once common among large American sedans like Buick and Cadillac, and featuring semi-flat rear floor to help improve rear passenger comfort.
Avalon is the first Toyota to use Dual VVT-i in the US market in a new 3.5-liter 3.5-liter V6-liter 3.5-liter V6 engine that meets ULEV certification and has a 280 hp (209 kW) power output with time 0-60 in 6.0 seconds. The engine was mated to 5-speed automatic sequential shift. Due to changes in the SAE testing procedure, power drops to 268 hp (200 kW) and torque decreases to 248 pounds (336 Ã, M) for the 2006 model year. The actual power output has not changed.
Avalon comes in four trim: standard (basic) XL, Tour, XLS, and Limited. The XL model includes a 16 "alloy wheels, while other trims come with larger 17" wheels. Performance-oriented tires are installed in Touring and Limited trims.
XL includes dual temperature automatic temperature control and audio and climate control mounted on the steering wheel. Trim Touring offers faux aluminum and all-black leather interior, sport-tuned suspension, unique powder-coated gray wheels, and spoiler mounted on the lips. XLS introduces the standard cargo net, six-disc CD changer, power sliding-glass moonroof, automatic dimming electrochromic front display and driver's side view mirrors, four-way passenger seat and HomeLink transceiver. High-end Limited trim offers air-ventilated seats with power driver padded driver pads, Toyota's Smart Key System with keyless start and key keys, tranquil acoustic front glass, rain moisturizer raindrops, upgraded 12-speak JBL audio system, LED swivel "in the mirror" in the side mirrors and steering wheel trimmed with wood and shift gear lever. The navigation system is optional for any trim level other than the XL version. Avalon has a flat rear-floor design and rear seat back. Vehicle Stability Control is optional on all trim levels. Other options include a Startless Start Engine key, rear window backlight and, on the Restricted model, the Dynamic Laser Sail Control System. HID lighting with automatic leveling is standard on Touring and Limited.
Model year changes
For the 2006 model year, Toyota expanded the availability of Vehicle Stability Control to XL and Touring trim levels. The 2007 model has a standard tire pressure monitoring system in all trims and an optional navigation system made for Touring trim levels.
The 2008 Avalon model released in 2007 received a mild facelift. Rear rear light receives smooth coloration, and the redesigned front fascia with the "Touring" model receives a black grille. Other changes include a six-speed automatic transmission, chrome exterior door handle for "Limited" trim, adjustable alloy wheels for "Touring" and "XLS trim", built-in brake buttons, improved rear brakes, and Bluetooth integration with all JBL Synthesis audio systems. The "Touring" model receives a multicolored grille, the "XLS" and "Limited" models have a chrome grille, and all models include a six-in-dash converter.
The 2009 model Avalon offers several changes: Vehicle Stability Control [VSC] is standard on all trim levels, and the Touring version is no longer offered. The XLS and Limited leather seats now offer Dark Charcoal color, and Indigo Ink Pearl's exterior color is replaced with Cocoa Bean Metallic.
The 2010 model year offers two updates: all passenger windows receive an auto up/down function, not just the driver and front passenger side, and the new accelerator pedal is redesigned.
Avalon went on sale in April 2010, for the 2011 model year, with revised styling and only two slim lines: a basic Avalon model and an upscale Limited trim. Back-up cameras become standard using a rearview mirror or a navigation screen for viewing, and the exterior side mirrors with integrated inflection signals are now folded. The updated navigation system now has real-time traffic updates. Other changes include a redesigned instrument cluster and center console, new wood style trim, new sheetmetal, and different front and rear fascia designs. Front and rear lights include LED piping, and the fuel economy is slightly upgraded to an estimated EPA mpg 20/29/23 (city/highway/combined). The revised Avalon has new rem-override controls. It has an improved suspension system and a 12-speaker JBL Synthesis system available only on Limited trim. The 17 "wheels are also standard on both trims although the Limited model has 10 spokes.Other exterior differences on the Limited include HID projector headlights.
Security
Avalon comes standard with anti-lock brakes, electronic brake power distribution, brake support, dual front airbags, front airbags front, front and rear airbags, and driver's knee airbags. For the 2009 Vehicle Stability Control model, traction control becomes standard while active head restrictions are added. In 2010, Star Security Systems added for the 2011 model year.
Avalon is subject to withdrawal of Toyota 2009-10 vehicles. The 2011 and newer models come standard with a brake-override system.
Avalon received an overall "Good" score on both the Offset Insurance Association for Road Safety (IIHS) and the side impact test. In 2009, with a new head restrained IIHS awarded the Avalon Top Safety Pick .
The "Good" Rating in the IIHS IIHS roof strength test obtained the 2011 model year as the appointment of the "Top Safety Pick 2010" organization. The 2011 model also received a "Top Safety Pick 2011" recommendation.
Reception

Edmunds.com, Trend Motor and > Car Magazine also ranked top in their own comparison. Consumer Reports rated Avalon at the top of the group tested in the big and top class category, scored in front of five other sedans in the January 2010 issue. In 2010, the 2011 Avalon model competed against Ford Taurus and received first place award from Motor Trend.
Fourth generation (XX40; 2012-2018)
The redesigned Avalon was partially revealed at the New York International Auto Show in April 2012, to be based on the same platform as the Lexus ES. The new grille is part of the redesign with redesigned lights that are now similar to the Camry. The interior controls have touch tap technology instead of buttons. In June 2012, Toyota announced Avalon will offer a hybrid powertrain. Avalon goes on sale in the US in early December 2012.
