The English Belief Hen Welfare (formerly Battery Hen Welfare Trust) is the first UK registered charity solely for laying hens. Founded in April 2005 by Jane Howorth MBE, and was established to raise awareness about 20 million chickens housed in a cage in England at that time. The headquarters of the charity is near Rose Ash, North Devon.

Destination

The purpose of the charity is to reduce consumer demand for eggs cultivated (factory farms), while encouraging support for the UK egg industry. It also includes educating consumers about processed foods containing eggs, such as: cakes, pasta, chocolates (fondant filled), quiche, ready-made Yorkshire puddings, ready-made pancakes, biscuits, fast food (TV dinner), and noodles. By 2016, about 46% of British battery eggs are used by food producers and in the entertainment industry.

BHWT houses thousands of commercial used chickens every year across the UK with the help of its volunteers. The cumulative total of chickens returns to 500,000 by 2016.

All chickens are taken out of the ranch and back home on the same day. This means they can go from the cage to the pet's backyard in just a few hours. Charities want chickens to be seen as pets, not cattle, and regularly promote the benefits of keeping chickens as pets through national and regional PR. BHWT regularly talks about the joy of seeing a hen in the daytime for the first time. These birds never sunbathe, bathe dust or stand on solid ground before.

The Trust seeks to work and cooperate with farmers instead of condemning them. It does not conform to extremist views or tactics and is not associated with other organizations or groups related in any way to a battery chicken. The coach of the charity was Jamie Oliver, Pam Ayres, Amanda Holden, Duchess of Richmond, Kate Humble, Philippa Forrester, Julia Kendell, Jimmy Doherty, and Antony Worrall Thompson.

Campaigns and awards

The Trust has managed to campaign to change the food industry, playing a role in Hellmanns that makes the switch to use only eggs with free range in its mayonnaise. The Trust also has "#feathercampaign" and targets people like the Mr. Kipling brand, which breaks free appointments, and McVitie is still using eggs in some of their products.
