Rebadging

In the past, Dell has modified some of the existing Inspiron machines to produce computers of higher quality or lower.

The first generation Inspiron XPS and Inspiron 9100 (2004-2006) share the same options in Intel Pentium 4 HT "Prescott" processors, RAM (DDR 400Ã, MHz), hard-drives (Ultra-ATA 5400/7200Ã, RPM) wireless card, LCD screen (at 15.4-inch; WXGA, WSXGA, WUXGA) and graphics card (ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 64Ã, MB/128Ã, MB), as well as the same chassis. Dell marketed XPS as the "main game engine", while marketing the 9100 as a "desktop replacement". The Inspiron 9100 is the rebadged XPS with the only difference between the two computers is the LCD Panel. Although both support the Samsung LCD 15.4, only the latest models of 9100 (3.2 GHz) are using the same LCD screen (Dell Part #s 7T774/W3866). Samsung's LCD panel supports 1920ÃÆ' â € "1200. 2.8-3.0Ã, GHz Inspiron 9100 previously uses a lower panel with a resolution of 1280ÃÆ' â €" 800 (Dell Part # Y0316).

Problem

Overheating

In 2003, Dell released a few lines of Inspiron notebooks that have overheating problems. The system will overheat and can cause damage to the microprocessor, video card, and motherboard. The system will also be randomly closed due to high internal temperatures. Overheating in the Inspiron system is mainly due to tasks and software that are consuming performance. This problem is determined due to the design of airflow from the bottom of the system. It will attract dirt/dust and clog up the heat sink, allowing air to not pass through it to cool the system. Affected models include Dell Inspiron 1100, 1150, 5100, 5150, and 5160. Also affected is Latitude 100L, close cloning of this model.

Dell acknowledged this problem and designed a new fan with better heatsinks and heatpipes to provide better cooling with less noise. Any improvements made at this point will include redesigned sections.

On September 20, Inspiron 5150 owners in the US brought classroom action against Dell. Settlement includes 100% cash replacement for certain repairs, and limited warranty extension to cover the types of repairs that become important for one year.

Following the lawsuit detailed above, in October 2006 customers who had purchased Dell Inspiron 1100, 1150, 5100, 5150, and 5160 notebook filed a class action lawsuit against Dell, alleging an error in relation to design, manufacture, warranty, advertisement and computer sales this. Similar action begins in Canada.

Overheating has been reduced by using pressurized air press sprays. Spray keyboard, Thermal Cooling Assembly The microprocessor located under the "I" - "backspace", back/exhaust air vents, lower air intake, and side air vents (all located on the right side of the affected system) have been effective in reducing the running temperature from normal operating temperature of 77-87 ° C to 45-55 ° C under average load. Note: Make sure the system is turned off and disconnected from the AC with the battery removed before using the spray. With AC and battery released, press the power button to drain the remaining charge from the capacitor. Never use compressed pressurized compressed water spray into electronically powered electronic devices.

Alternately, some users of this affected model find relief by underclocking their processors.

Motherboard

On a number of Inspiron 5150 and Latitude 100L systems, the design flaws on tab positioning in panel C at the bottom of the laptop have caused problems. Any pressure applied to the upper left corner of the laptop causes this tab to suppress the motherboard and especially against the "LVC14A" chip. This causes the solder between this chip and the motherboard is damaged. This causes a sudden shut-down of the system as a result of the movement of the laptop; in some cases the laptop will not reboot at all. Dell has redesigned the new 5150 model to avoid this problem. Some models reveal cases where someone has manually turned off the tab from panel C by hand during the creation process. Dell currently covers this error in the United States under the Lundell Settlement, although it is unknown whether Dell will fix this error for free outside the US. In January 2007, a similar lawsuit began in Canada, and Dell in the Netherlands agreed to repair Dutch computers after criticism in Kassa's consumer program.

This is also a problem with the Inspiron 1150, with the same chip providing problems with broken faults. Soldering is not recommended. Reheating the pin can rebuild the connection and solve the dead power problem at the expense of possibly losing the use of the touch-pad mouse.

Withdrawal of battery in 2006

Dell sent a notice to many of their laptop customers on August 14, 2006, saying that Sony batteries in the following models could catch fire, or even explode:

Affected Model

Users of many computers purchased between April 2004 and July 18, 2006 received a recommendation that they should unplug the battery and run their computer with AC power until the replacement arrived. The problematic batteries made by Sony led to program withdrawals at other laptop computer companies as well, including Hitachi, Toshiba, Lenovo (IBM) and Apple.

Power supply problems

Most Dell laptop computers have a special external power supply (PSU) that can not be replaced by third-party universal supplies. PSU has what is called UniqueWare (TM) Add-Only Memory, known as DS2501 type. This is a parasitic electrical circuit memory chip connected to the central identification pin at the plug, via a 2 m long wire that is not paired next to the PSU cable. This chip generates a special signal using a 1-wire communication protocol known as "1-wire" in identifying the PSU as the original Dell PSU. This chip handles all the data needed to authenticate the payload. If a power supply not manufactured by Dell is used, or the cable near the connector becomes damaged because it is not uncommon after some use, the PSU stops charging and the CPU runs slower, even though the computer can be used indefinitely as long as it remains installed. If this problem occurs during startup, the message "The type of AC power adapter can not be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery is not charged" is displayed. This will continue until the external PSU is replaced. Some third-party suppliers create power supplies with special conditions for Dell computers at a lower price than Dell's. It is possible to work around the slowdown, but not charging the battery, by installing the CPU clock utility. In some models (eg 9100), the problem can be done by starting the computer without the battery installed and installing the battery after the computer boots.

Another problem arises after it is widely used with the motherboard power connector; metal parts such as flaps that touch the outside of the plug lose their voltage and fail to make contact so that the power does not reach the computer. The "official" solution is to replace the connectors on the motherboard, which requires dis-assembling some computers and desolding parts with multiple pins; many companies charge a large amount for the work involved. Simple alternatives have been suggested; for example a thin "solder" skin on the outside of the connector barrel on the PSU (with care not to overheat the plastic part of the connector, and this thickened connector should not be used with another Dell laptop, not damaged, as it will stretch the springs and damage or even making overheat units of plug and socket, causing them to melt or stick permanently).

One other problem could happen with the watt rating of the power supply. There are 2 Dell power supplies used for various Inspiron models that have the same plug and voltage assemblies, a 65-watt PA-6 supply model and a 90-watt PA-9 supply model. Some models (eg Inspiron 1100) are shipped with PA-9. If PA-6 (or an equivalent aftermarket supply) is used in this model then the system may not boot at any given time. In such cases, the battery light will be on for a few seconds when the supply is plugged in. This can also happen if the power supply becomes marginal. Marginal inventory may indicate as supplying full voltage even if tested with a volt meter when the supply is plugged into the computer and attempts are made to power the computer.

These issues are discussed in detail, and suggested solutions and solutions, in a discussion on Tom's hardware site, and on The Laptop Junction website.

Hibernation sensor issue

There was a problem with the hibernation sensor located on some old laptops. Unlike many laptops that use mechanical switches to detect when the lid is closed, in this system the sensor is a magnetic reed switch located between the touchpad and the front edge of the laptop. There is a magnet located on the top lid above this switch, and when the lid is closed the magnet triggers the reed switch. If the magnet loses power then the system will not go into suspend or hibernate if the lid is closed. Magnetic strength can be checked by running a paper clip along the top edge of the screen. A worse problem occurs if the reed switch fails. Sometimes the switch will fail in a closed position with the contacts sticking together. In this case the system will not be active. There are several ways to check this. First the laptop can be partially dismantled and the mouse assemblies can be unplugged from the system board and the system is turned on. If the boot system with the mouse is unplugged then it is a switch. Another way to check the problem is to run a magnet above the reed switch, there should be a weak click when the magnet triggers the switch. It does not require disassembly but the magnet must be in the correct position and strong enough. Some people have modified the laptop circuit by cutting the switch from the assembly, with the downside being the system will no longer suspend if the lid is closed.

LCD vertical line issue

Some 17 "Inspiron 8600, 9200, 9300, 6000, 1750, and XPS Gen 2 LCD notebooks have vertical manufacturing line defects. The symptoms range from individual lines to the entire screen bar with inverted colors. Most problems show after 2-4 years of use.

Dell is very reluctant to replace these panels after warranty, although there is a direct connection to the damaged parts of their suppliers. Even customer warranty difficulty to replace, and replace the screen often develop defects after a short time.
