Materials

Electrical enclosures are usually made of rigid plastic, metal, especially stainless steel, carbon steel, and aluminum. Steel cabinets can be painted or galvanized. Mass-produced equipment will generally have customized enclosures, but standard enclosures are made for special or small production equipment. For non-metallic cover; ABS plastics are only acceptable for indoor applications requiring low NEMA ratings (1, or 2), and are inadequate for harsh environments. For NEMA 3 and above polycarbonate, reinforced glass, polycarbonate, and fiberglass boxes are used and have a gasket to ensure dry and dust free areas in the box.

Terminology

Cages for some destinations have partially removable (KO) openings to accommodate cables, connectors, or channels. Where they are small and are primarily intended to hide electrical intersections from view, or protect them from interference, they are also known as junction boxes, walkers or technically as the serving area interfaces.

Telcordia Technologies has proposed a general requirement for telecommunication equipment cabinets. This requirement was developed with input from US service providers, and is intended to provide an appropriate environment for telecommunication equipment and passive electronics companies placed in cabinets or above ground enclosures (usually installed above or below) within the outside of the factory environment. The proposed standards include functional design criteria, general mechanical and environmental requirements, desired features, and performance tests.

Telecommunication huts are fully assembled or modular structures that can be transported within a framework capable of accommodating electronic communication systems. These booths provide a controlled internal environment for communication equipment and the occasional craftsman. The cottage is designed with keys, security, and alarms to prevent unauthorized access. The cottage can be equipped with decorative facade to meet local building requirements. Telecommunication huts are designed to withstand the climatic conditions that exist throughout the United States including rain, snow, hail, strong winds, ice, sandstorms, earthquakes, and lightning.

Electronic appliance cabinets can be placed in both indoor and outdoor locations. As described in the industry standard GR-3031 and GR-3033, cabinets comprise an out-finished closure box along with integral hardware components, such as the connection and ground connection; internal walls and braces for space splicing and battery compartment; frame and track rack; and doors, seals, and hinges.

Battery backup cabinet

Battery backup cabinets are used exclusively and exclusively for backup battery facilities in both indoor and outdoor locations. As described in GR-3033, this cabinet may or may not have a separate room for electronics used to monitor, alarm, and control it.

In-room backup cabinet cabinets include cabinets placed inside the outer physical envelope of buildings or structures where space has active environmental controls to control the temperature, humidity, and air quality of the ambient space.
