In telecommunications, long distance redirection is a service feature that allows incoming calls to long distance call forwarding numbers to be forwarded automatically to any reply location specified by the call recipient.

Customers can have a long-distance phone number in a central transfer office without having another local phone service in that office.

One common goal for this service is to allow customers to maintain their phone number when they move to a location served by different telephone exchanges. This service is useful for business customers with widely advertised numbers that appear on canopy papers, vehicles, and various marketing literature. When the customer rings, their calls are routed to the new location seamlessly.

Long distance call diverting is also a means for suburban businesses to get local downtown numbers (with wide coverage area) for incoming calls; while cheaper than foreign exchange channels, this can reduce long distance phone charges in a market where local calls are rated flat but phone calls are expensive.

One alternative to RCF is Caller Redirect where callers only hear interception messages informing them that the number has changed. Another alternative is to port an existing number to a voice over IP carrier, which is not tied to a single physical location because customers can be anywhere on the broadband Internet. However, not all phone numbers can be ported.

Remote Access to Call Forwarding

Remote Call Forwarding (RCF) does not require a physical phone or physical input by the customer to get the call forwarded.

In this case, it is different from (Similarly called Distance) Remote Access to Call Forwarding in that the number is attached to the physical line where it rings normally until a call is made to a remote number to activate the redirection.

To enable Remote Access to Call Forwarding, the subscriber dials the Access Directory Access Number provided by the provider, entering the telephone number of the channel to be diverted along with the personal identification number (PIN), the vertical service code (such as 72 # or * 73) and the number for which calls will be forwarded.

Remote Access to Call Forwarding allows incoming calls to be diverted and answered elsewhere if customers can not use their phones normally (for example, the numbers are assigned to lost or stolen wireless handsets or to home phones that require repair services). In some cases, businesses that subscribe to standard call forwarding (* 72) may be able to request a temporary divert of incoming calls when calling a telecommunication service repair number (such as 6-1-1) to report a channel outage.
