The Rolls-Royce 102EX , also known as Phantom Experimental Electric (EE), is a one-off electric prototype version of Rolls-Royce Phantom VII. It was made by Rolls-Royce to measure customer response and other stakeholders for Rolls-Royce power.

102EX was revealed at the Geneva Motor Show 2011.

Specifications

The 102EX is powered by two permanent magnetics-a synchronous magnet equipped with a UQM mounted in the rear sub-frame. Each of these motors is powered up to 145 kW for maximum system output of 290 kW (389 hp). The maximum torque output is 800Ã, N? M (590 Â £ lb). Power is transmitted to the rear wheels by a 1-speed Xtrac transmission with integrated differential.

These motors are supplied by 71 kWh batteries consisting of 96 NCM cells. These cells are placed in the space occupied by standard Phantom engines and gearboxes. The peak battery current is 850 amperes sent at 338 volts (DC). The cells are manufactured by Dow Kokam, the Scottish company Axeon assembled into batteries. Electrical drivetrain integration is done by Lotus Engineering.

The battery pack is charged by 3 3-watt charger units allowing minimum charging time of about 8 hours. Alternatively, Phantom is also equipped with an induction charger that allows the car to be charged wirelessly.

102EX is distinguished from the Phantom series production visually. Painted in "Atlantic Chrome" silver that uses nano-particle ceramics to enhance paint reflectivity. It comes with a red double-R badge, which Rolls-Royce uses to show its experimental vehicle. Spirit of Ecstasy is made from Makrolon polycarbonate and is illuminated by blue LED lights. The fuel filler cap is equipped with a glass window, allowing one to see the five pin sockets used to charge 102EX. Interior and luggage compartment using leather "Corinova". It is a kind of vegetable tanned skin, compared to chrome brown like regular Phantom skin.

Reception

The Phantom was well received by automotive journalists. Reviewer praised the remarkable improvements given by the quiet powertrain of 102EX, while some also feel that the driving quality has been improved over the standard Phantom.

Rolls-Royce reveals in 2012 that customer reaction to 102EX has been lukewarm. While the refinements of 102EX have been praised, customers are taking issue with a limited range of cars and long charging times. Some also feel that the absence of the V12 is unaffected by the features of the car.
