AirDrop - Crypto Mining Blog

AirDrop is an ad-hoc service on Apple MacOS and iOS operating systems, introduced in Mac OS X Lion (Mac OS X 10.7) and iOS 7, allowing file transfers between supported Macintosh Computers and iOS devices via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, without using email or mass storage devices.

Before OS X Yosemite (OS X 10.10), and under OS X Lion, Mountain Lion, and Mavericks (OS X 10.7-10.9, respectively) the AirDrop protocol in macOS is different from the iOS AirDrop protocol, and therefore both are not interoperable one to another. However, OS X Yosemite and later support the iOS AirDrop protocol, which is used for transfers between Mac and iOS devices as well as between two Mac 2012 or newer computers, and that use Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The old mode for the old AirDrop protocol (which uses Wi-Fi only) between two Mac 2012 or older computers is also available.

There is no limit on the size of the files that AirDrop will accommodate.

macOS

Shift ? Cmd R .

Wi-Fi must be turned on for AirDrop to recognize other devices. Other devices should also have AirDrop selected in the Finder window sidebar to be able to transfer files. Furthermore, the file is not automatically received; the receiving user must accept the transfer. This is done to improve security and privacy.

iOS

On iOS 7 and later, AirDrop is accessible by tapping Settings & gt; General & gt; AirDrop, or swipe the home screen through the Control Center. Both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are automatically enabled when AirDrop is enabled as both are utilized.

Options for controlling the discovery of AirDrop by other devices include:

  • No one can see the device (Airdrop disabled)
  • Only contacts can see the device
  • Everyone can see the device.

In iOS 7 or later, if the app implements AirDrop support, it is available via the share button. AirDrop is subject to a number of restrictions on iOS, such as the inability to share music or video from native apps.

Security and privacy

AirDrop uses TLS encryption over a direct peer-to-peer Wi-Fi connection that Apple creates to transfer files. Wi-Fi radio from source and target devices communicates directly without using an Internet connection or Wi-Fi Access Point.

At least in one case, users with AirDrop are set to receive from "Everyone" sent unwanted unwanted sexual images from nearby strangers. On August 13, 2017, New York Post reported that at least two women were sent nude pictures while on the go.
