The BTR-80 (Russian: ???????????????? /Bronetransporter, literally "Armored Transporter ") is an 8A-8 wheeled amphibious aircraft carrier (APC) designed in the Soviet Union. It was adopted in 1986 and replaced the previous vehicle, BTR-60 and BTR-70, in the Soviet Army. It was first used during the Soviet war in Afghanistan.

Description
Soviet-based BTR-80 on BTR-70 APC. The engine features a 260-hp, turbocharged V-8 engine, water-cooled, diesel, twin-engine petrol refurbishment installed in BTR-60 and BTR-70 vehicles. The configured hull back of the hull accommodates a new single engine. The Soviets removed the modified BTR-70 roof chamfer, lifted the back, and compressed the rear-facing engine compartment. Standard equipment includes TNPO vision block, TNP-B and TKN-3 optical devices for driver and commander, infrared search lamp OU-3GA2M, six smoke grenade launchers 81 mm 902V "Tucha", radioset (R-173 or R- 163-50U ), intercom, and hydrojet for amphibian propulsion.
Ability
Soviets modified the truncated cone minarets used on BTR-70 for BTR-80 by redesigning the mantlet. This allows the 7.5 mm (0.57 inch) KPTT and 7.62 mm (0.3 inches) KPVT and coaxial machine guns to be raised to a maximum of 60 degrees. This high fire angle is useful in pulling targets on steep slopes, in urban battles, and to engage low-flying low flying targets. The Soviets have also modified the design and positioning of shooting ports; the port is now round, not tear-shaped, and has a ball mount similar to that used on BMP-1. The forward ignition port is now sitting in a sloping niche, allowing the infantry to shoot in front of the vehicle.
The redesigned side door is separated horizontally. The top opens forward; this gives the armies some protection against light arms fire from the front of the vehicle. The bottom is open down, forming a step. Six grenade smoke projectors mounted on the back of the turret.
BTR-80 can climb the slope with a gradient of up to 60% and climb a vertical step of 0.5 m.
