Battery Corradino (Maltese: Batteriji ta 'Kordin ) is a series of artillery batteries in Corradino Heights, near Paola, Malta built by Maltese rebels during the French blockade of 1798-1800. Batteries form part of the battery chain, redoubts and entrenchments that surround the French position at Marsamxett and Grand Harbor.
Battery Corradino is built in the yard of Grand Master's Stables, a large baroque building atop Corradino Heights. During the siege, the stable was used as a barracks for the rebels. There are three batteries, facing G? Jn Dwieli, Senglea and Floriana Line respectively:
- The battery facing G? ajn Dwieli is located near the entrance of the cage, and it is armed with two 8-pound weapons.
- The battery facing the road coming from Senglea is armed with two 8-pounder guns taken from Xrobb l-G? a? in the coastal cemetery.
- The battery facing Marsa and the Floriana Line was initially armed with four 6-pound rifles, but the UK then added two 9-inch mortars.
The battery is connected to a long ruined wall. The Belvedere tower is also located to the north of the battery. At the end of the siege, the batteries are armed with five cannons, including 18-pounders taken from St Battery. Julian. Architect Michele Cachia has a major role in battery development, which was completed in January 1799.
The adjacent battery and camp are one of the biggest and most important rebel positions. The camp was under the overall command of Emmanuele Vitale and was surrounded by 224 men from Rabat and Dingli.
On 21 November 1798, French troops attacked Corradino, but were rejected by the Maltese. Throughout the siege, the Valletta Salute Battery weapons were trained at Corradino to fight the rebels.
The Grand Master's Stables were heavily damaged by the French bombing, and the devastated structure was destroyed by order of 21 January 1811. The adjacent batteries may also be dismantled at this time. The area that was once occupied by cages and batteries is now highly industrialized.
