History
Introduction and initial release
iOS 5 was introduced at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference on June 6, 2011, with a beta version available to developers in the future.
iOS 5 was officially released on October 12, 2011.
Update
5.0.1
iOS 5.0.1 was released on November 10, 2011 as the first update for iOS 5. Updates include fixes for battery issues.
5.1
iOS 5.1 was released on March 8, 2012. The update includes support for Japanese for Siri, a redesigned Camera app for iPad, and bug fixes for battery-resistance issues.
5.1.1
iOS 5.1.1 was released on May 7, 2012. The update includes increased reliability for high dynamic range photos, improved Safari bookmark sync, and bug fixes.
System features
Notifications
In older versions of iOS, notifications appear on the screen as dialog boxes, interrupting current activity. On iOS 5, notifications are changed, and appear as temporary banners at the top of the screen. The latest notifications can also be accessed by dragging the "Notification Center" down from the top of the screen. Users who prefer the old notification system can save it by selecting the appropriate option in the Settings menu.
iCloud
iOS 5 introduces iCloud, Apple's cloud storage service. This new service allows users to sync their music, images, videos and app data across all of their iCloud-enabled devices.
Wireless update
iOS 5 allows wireless system updates on supported devices, which means that computers and iTunes are not required to update the device. Both device activation and new updates can be made wirelessly.
Twitter Integration
iOS 5 has deep Twitter integration. Users can log into Twitter directly from the Settings menu. Photos can be "tweeted" directly from the Photos or Camera app, and users can also tweet from Safari, YouTube, and the Google Maps app.
Multitasking
Multitasking movements debut on iPad with iOS 5 release. Multitasking allows users to jump between apps without tapping the home double button or first going to the home screen. Multitasking movement is only available on iPad 2.
Keyboard
The iPad keyboard can be undocked from the bottom of the screen, and can be split into two half-keyboards.
App features
Photos and Cameras
The first iOS 5 release allows the Camera app to be accessed easily from the lock screen for the first time. The user clicks the home button twice, the camera icon will appear next to the "Slide to unlock" message, and the user will click on it to directly access the camera. The iOS 5.1 update simplifies the process, dropping the double-click procedure of the home button, but requiring the user to swipe the camera icon. For security purposes when the device is locked with a passcode, this camera access method only allows access to the Camera app, and no other features on the device.
Pressing the volume-up button allows the user to take a picture.
Message
iMessage, the new instant messaging service built into the Messages app, lets anyone who uses iOS 5 devices to send basic and multimedia messages to others with compatible iOS 5 devices. Unlike SMS, messages sent via iMessage use the Internet instead of regular mobile SMS, but also in contrast to regular SMS, Android and BlackBerry devices are not compatible with the service. iMessages are synchronized across user devices, and are coded in blue, with regular green SMS.
The iOS Mail app includes rich text formatting, better indented controls, message tagging, and the ability to drag addresses between To, CC, and BCC.
Reminder
Reminders allow users to create task lists with warnings that can be date-based or location-based.
Newsstand
Newsstand does not act as a native app, but a special folder. When selected, it shows an icon for all the magazines that are subscribed, such as newspapers and magazines. New issues are downloaded automatically.
Music and Video
On iPhone, iPod apps are replaced by separate Music and Video apps.
Problem
Initial upgrade issue
The iOS 5 release early October 2011 sees significant upgrade issues, with errors during installation and the advantages of Apple servers.
Battery life of iPhone 4S
Following a user's complaint, Apple officially confirmed that iOS 5 has a bad battery life for some iPhone 4S users, and claims that upcoming software updates will fix the problem. The iOS 5.0.1 update fixes bugs related to battery issues.
Wi-Fi connectivity down
In November 2011, Engadget reported that iOS 5 update caused Wi-Fi connections to drop for some users. The report also wrote that "The recent update of iOS 5.0.1 has not fixed the problem yet," and questioned whether the event was unrelated or part of a larger problem.
SIM card failure
Some iPhone 4S users reported problems with the SIM card in iOS 5, were given an error message about "Invalid SIM" and "SIM Failure". Apple released the second software update 5.0.1 designed to fix SIM card problems.
Phone call echo
Some iPhone 4S users reported random echo appearances during phone calls made with earphones in iOS 5 initial release. Others in the call were sometimes unable to hear the conversation because of the problem.
Reception
Many aspects of iOS 5 receive positive reviews, including new notification centers, the ability to sync and update wirelessly, iMessage, and more. Richmond Shane from Telegraph says "iOS 5 is a brilliant improvement for brilliant operating systems, different people looking for different things in the mobile operating system. That's why some people prefer BlackBerry, Android or Windows Mobile I appreciate the ease of use and attention to detail in the design. With iOS 5, Apple continues to bring the best user experience available. "
Richard Goodwin of Know Your Mobile said "Overall, we consider iOS 5 is everything it needs. We can not wait to get our teeth stuck in it as soon as it's released in Autumn 2011."
Supported devices
With this release, Apple dropped support for older devices, particularly the second generation iPhone 3G and iPod Touch.
