iPhone 3G is a smartphone designed and marketed by Apple Inc. This is the second generation of iPhone, the original iPhone replacement, and was introduced on June 9, 2008, at WWDC 2008 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, USA.

The iPhone 3G is internally similar to its predecessor, but includes some new hardware features, such as GPS, 3G data and tri-band UMTS/HSDPA. The device was initially loaded with iPhone 2.0 being launched simultaneously. In addition to other features (including push email and turn-by-turn navigation), the new operating system introduced App Store - Apple's new distribution platform for third-party applications.

Histori

On July 11, 2008, Apple released the iPhone 3G in twenty-two countries in two storage options, 8GB and 16GB. The 16GB model is produced in black or white.

After the launch of the iPhone 3GS replacement model one year later, the 3G iPhone was still on sale but became Apple's budget phone offer, with prices cut in half. This $ 99 iPhone 3G required a two-year contract and is available only in black and with 8 GB of storage, but comes bundled with the new iPhone 3.0 OS then firmware. On June 7, 2010, the iPhone 3G was finally discontinued, and replaced as Apple's budget phone with 3GGB 3G 8GB sale for the same price of $ 99 with a 2-year contract.

Software

The iPhone 3G comes with the latest version of iPhone OS, and continues to receive updates for its software for over two years, with major iterations being released each year. However, the phone has access to a decrease in the proportion of new features with each update as its hardware is replaced by subsequent models.

When launched, iPhone 3G comes preloaded with iPhone OS 2.0. It introduces the App Store, Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync support, Apple MobileMe service, and push email support, along with new features and other bug fixes.

In June 2009, iPhone 3G users received the iPhone OS 3.0 software update, which introduced the long-awaited MMS feature, copy and paste, landscape support for more apps, Bluetooth stereo support, and other enhancements.

In June 2010, Apple released an iOS 4.0 software update. Unlike the successor models, iPhone 3G does not support important features of iOS 4.0 such as multitasking, the ability to set the main screen wallpaper, or Bluetooth keyboard support. However, it provides access to the integrated mailbox feature, the home screen folder to further manage apps, playlist creation, and other enhancements. This update is widely criticized for its slow performance on iPhone 3G, although the release of iOS 4.1 in September 2010 solved this problem. However, unlike the more modern iOS devices, this update again does not provide iPhone 3G owners with access to important features, in this case the Game Center app.

On November 22, 2010, iPhone 3G received the iOS 4.2 software update (as iOS 4.2.1), which introduced features like YouTube voting, and security fixes. However, iPhone 3G can not use many of the features included in this update, such as AirPlay and Safari Text Search. This is the last iOS release to support this iPhone model; iOS 4.3 and later are not compatible with this iPhone model due to hardware limitations and performance issues.

Hardware

Design

The back of the iPhone 3G features a redesigned polycarbonate plastic housing, replacing the back of the first generation aluminum. The buttons are converted from plastic to metal, and the ends of the phone are tapered, giving a better handle. The iPhone 3G introduces the first official color option for the outer casing, with the 16GB version available in black and white.

The iPhone 3G dimension is slightly larger than the original iPhone. The height is 116 millimeters (4.6 inches) wide, 62 millimeters (2.4 inches) long, and 12 millimeters (0.47 inches), compared to its predecessor, which is 110 millimeters (4.3 inches), 61 millimeters (2, 4 Width, and a depth of 12 millimeters (0.47 inches).

The iPhone 3G uses a 3.5 inch (89 mm) capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 480ÃÆ' â € "320 (HVGA) at 163 ppi. The scratch-resistant glass is on top of the screen. Just like the original iPhone, the touch screen is designed for bare fingers, or multiple fingers for multi-touch sensing. This device displays the same sensor as its predecessor. The proximity sensor (which disables display during calls when the face is close) is repositioned to conserve battery power and to prevent accidental input from the user's face and ears. The ambient light sensor is inserted to adjust the screen brightness for various lighting conditions, which helps conserve battery power. The 3-axes accelerometer is inserted to sense the orientation of the phone and change the screen accordingly, allowing the user to easily switch between portrait and landscape modes.

Processor and memory

Most of the iPhone 3G internal hardware is based on the original iPhone. This still includes the Samsung 32-bit RISC ARM11 620 MHz processor (below to 412 MHz), PowerVR MBX Lite 3D GPU, and 128 MB packages on the DRAM (PoP) package.

Rear camera

On the back of the device, iPhone 3G has the same 2.0 megapixel fixed-focus camera from its predecessor. This camera does not have an optical zoom, flash, autofocus, or original video recording, although various apps are available to allow video recording on the device. The iPhone 3G operating system supports photo geotagging.

Connectivity

In addition to EDGE, iPhone 3G supports Assisted GPS, 3G data, and tri-band UMTS/HSDPA. This upgrade allows faster data downloads and turn-by-turn navigation with maps compared to previous devices.

Like its predecessor, iPhone 3G has an exclusive 30-pin dock connector to charge the device. It can also be used to synchronize the device with a computer and to connect various accessories.

The iPhone 3G has a flattened 3.5 mm headphone jack instead of the hidden headphone jack included on the original iPhone; because it can be used with headphones other than those provided by Apple.

Battery

The iPhone 3G has an enhanced internal rechargeable battery at 1150 mAh, which, like its predecessor, can not be replaced by the user. Apple states that the iPhone 3G battery can provide up to six hours of web browsing over Wi-Fi, or five hours via 3G, or 25 hours of audio playback. Or, it says to provide 300 hours of standby time.

Reception

Walt Mossberg of The Wall Street Journal describes the device as "a more capable version of an already excellent device." However, he says that it has "hidden costs."

Problems

Battery depletion

iOS 4, which is still compatible with iPhone 3G, was released on June 21, 2010. An article in the Wall Street Journal column Digits on July 28, 2010 reported that the iPhone 3G updating the phone to iOS 4 responded slowly, battery life, and it gets very hot.
