Histori

Origins

Shelton was inhabited by the British as part of the city of Stratford, Connecticut, in 1639. On May 15, 1656, the Connecticut Colonies Court in Hartford confirmed that the city of Stratford includes all the 12 miles (19 km) inland area of the Long Island Sound, between the Housatonic River and the city line Fairfield. In 1662, the chosen men of Stratford Lt. Joseph Judson, Capt. Joseph Hawley and John Minor have secured all written transfer acts from Golden Hill Paugussett Indian Nation to this vast territory consisting of the cities of Trumbull, Shelton, and Monroe today. Shelton was separated from Stratford in 1789, like Huntington (named after Samuel Huntington). The current name comes from a manufacturing village beginning in the 1860s named for the Shelton Company founded by Edward N. Shelton - also the founder of the Ousaton Water Supply Company. The rapidly growing Borough Shelton was incorporated as a city in 1915 and consolidated with Huntington city in 1919 to build Shelton city now.

Shelton industry decline

Shelton is the location of one of the largest fires in the United States. It happened in 1975 when the Sponge Rubber Products factory (formerly owned by B.F.Goodrich) was burned. Charles Moeller, president of parent company Grand Sheet Metal Products, was acquitted on the charge of arson, but in a civil lawsuit, a jury in 1988 ruled that the insurance company did not have to pay a claim over the fire because greater evidence showed high-ranking firms set fire to claim money insurance. The other eight are punished or convicted.

The explosion that destroyed the Sponge Rubber Factory on Canal Street in 1975 marked the start of Shelton's industrial decline. During the rest of the 1970s and 1980s, several companies operate factories along the banks of the Housatonic either out of business or move to areas where labor and operating costs are cheaper. In 1995, Sikorsky Aircraft closed a factory off Bridgeport Avenue that produces electrical components for helicopters.

The rise of office space Shelton

With the completion of Route 8, new office space and businesses are drawn to the city, because of its location in Fairfield County plus the low cost of doing business compared to places like Stamford or Greenwich. Big companies like Tetley Tea, TIE Communication, I.T.T., Black and Decker, Sikorsky Aircraft, Gama Aviation, Chesebrough-Pond's, Tetra-Pak, General Electric, and Bunker Ramo. Over 2,000,000 square feet (190,000 m 2 ) of corporate office space spread over 12 buildings built by R.D. Scinto corporation itself.

City of downtown renovation

Efforts are being made to restore the nineteenth-century industrial buildings in downtown areas; those who could be repaired were destroyed in the late 1990s and early 2000s and replaced with Memorial Veterans and farmers markets. The 10-acre Riverwalk Park (40,000 m 2 ) next to the Veterans Memorial is built on the site of the former Sponge Rubber Factory. Other buildings along Howe Avenue, one of the city's main streets, have been repaired, while developers have renovated two 19th-century factory buildings on Bridge Street, turning them into luxurious condos. Several streets in the city center have been reconstructed as part of a road repair project: the sidewalks are rebuilt with bricks and cobbles, trees planted, and several power lines are poured underground to enhance the appearance of Shelton's central business district. In March 2008, Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell announced that after negotiations with State Senator Dan Debicella and Country Representative Jason Perillo, the state bond fund of $ 2 million will be directed to additional infrastructure improvements that lead to more than $ 100 million in investment private in downtown city.
