The development code of this vehicle is 086A and its main production names are 86 (pronounced "eight-six" or Hachi-Roku (????) in Japanese) or < b> GT86 , reference Toyota coupe front-engined engine and rear-wheel drive and hatchback, in the form of:
- the 1967 2000 GT (Japan's semi fastback coupe, whose design cues adorned 86 and which is also powered by a 2.0-liter engine); and
- range 1983 to 1987 AE 86 (famous for its ability to handle and float).
Toyota also refers to its first sports car, the Sports 800, given that both these cars and 86 share the layout of the boxer engine, which is widely used by project partners and 86 manufacturers, Subaru.

Pre-launch concept car
The initial layout and design elements for 86 are presented by Toyota using the "FT" concept car nomenclature (Future Toyota). The first is the Toyota FT-HS , which was presented at the Detroit Motor Show in 2007. It has a front engine, rear wheel layout and 2 2 seats and is powered by a V6 engine with hybrid electric power. In 2008, Toyota purchased 16.5% of Fuji Heavy Industries, which included the Subaru automotive brand. Toyota, led by project leader Tetsuya Tada, then offers Subaru to engage in his new sports coupà © project, by developing a new D-4S boxer machine. This was rejected because the design was at odds with Subaru's reputation for high-performance all-wheel drive (AWD) cars. This resulted in the project stopping for up to six months before Toyota invited Subaru journalists and engineers to test the developmental prototype. Following this test, Subaru agrees to engage further in the development.
This new collaboration resulted in a new concept car, FT-86 , which was revealed at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 2009. Smaller than the FT-HS, the FT-86 design is even further. enhanced by the design studio Toyota ED 2 while the hybrid V6 power plant was replaced by the new D-4S boxer. Subaru provides chassis and gearboxes, adapting them from their Impreza. The concept is painted in Shoujyouhi Red , which is reported as a basic part of Japanese apes.
At the Tokyo Motor Show 2010, Toyota later launched its line of G sports aftermarket accessories, along with the FT-86 G Sports concept car. It features a G Sports carbon fiber panel, a bonnet, rear wing, 19 inch (48 cm) wheels, Recaro racing seats, and an interior rollcage. The D-4S engine also adds a turbocharger.
In 2011, Toyota and Subaru launched five near-production concept cars to show their progress with the project. The first, known as the FT-86 II Concept , was launched at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2011. ED 2 refined the initial FT-86 design, by developing a new front and rear fascia , and slightly increase the concept dimension. At the same event, Subaru also launched a transparent silhouette from the car that showcased the new D-4S boxer engine and featured "Boxer Sports Car Architecture" .
Scion followed next in April 2011 at the New York Motor Show with FR-S Sports Coupà © à © Concept , co-developed with Five Axis aftermarket tuners. Another semi-transparent Subaru concept, known as BRZ Prologue , was shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, followed in November at the Los Angeles Motor Show by BRZ Concept STi , the first full mock-up of the Subaru version of 86 with input from Subaru Tecnica International (STI).
Development and production
Toyota 86's first production debuted at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show. All variants are built at Gunma Subaru's Main Factory, with the first car assembled on February 2 before sales begin in March and delivery in April. 7,000 orders were placed for Toyota 86 in the first month of production, while Subaru took 3,500 orders.
In the United States, Scion is allocated 10,000 units of production in 2013 model (MY13), while Subaru is limited to only 6,000 units.
Engineering
The 86's engine, known as the Toyota 4U-GSE code and the Subaru FA20 code, is a naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine that uses Subaru's horizontal boxer engine design, with the addition of the Toyota D-4S injection system, which uses both direct and injection materials burn port. Given its placement, 86 can be considered to have a front engine, rear-wheel drive design. The engine runs on 98 RON (unleaded premium) fuel and features a 12.5: 1 compression ratio and a 86mm (3.4 in) bore and stroke that produces 200 horsepower (149 kW, 203 PS) at 7,000 rpm and 151 lb? ft (205Ã, N? m) torque at 6,000 rpm. As part of a low 86-weight design, this car uses an aluminum hood, sturdy roof, and trunk as opposed to a hatchback. The boxing machine sits as far away as possible and is as low as possible on the machine for 53% weight distribution ahead and 47% behind. The low seating engine provides an even lower center of gravity than the Nissan GTR and is only 0.6 inches higher than the Lexus LFA.
The 86, BRZ and FR-S are offered with two 6-speed transmissions, an in-house developed Toyota TL70 manual gearbox (based on Aisin AI's AZ6) and Aisin-Warner A960E automatic transmissions, modified from those used on the Lexus IS 250. Which the latter using a traditional wet torque converter design, but its software has been engineered to mimic the response of a double clutch gearbox. Automatic transmission uses three different modes: Sport, Snow, and Normal. A torque feels a limited slip differential is standard on most models.
The vehicles are offered with 16 "steel and alloy wheels shod with Yokohama dB Decibel E70 tires of 205/55 or 17" alloy wheels with Michelin Primacy HP 215/45 tires, depending on the sales market. The limited edition Toyota Racing Development (TRD) GT86 model is offered with 18 "forged aluminum wheels, fitted with Yokohama Advan Sport tire tires Michelin Pilot Sport 3 with 225/40 size, also market dependent All non-TRD cars feature ventilated front disc brakes and solid rear disc brakes on the base model or, on higher models, as well as ventilated rear disc brakes with two opposite piston-front calipers and a single caliper design on the rear. The TRD edition instead has an enhanced braking system consisting of a two-piece rotor Improved TRD and TRD six-pot 355mm front and 345mm four-pot rear calipers (compared to 294mm and 290mm GTS calibers and 277mmm and 286mm GTs respectively) Suspension designs consist of MacPherson front struts and double wishbones on the back.
In 2016, for the 2017 model year, 86 was upgraded to 153 kW (205 hp) and 212 N? M (156 lb). Drive final rate is also updated from 4.1 to 4.3.
Design
86 is designed around a front-mounted boxer engine, a rear-wheel drive configuration, inspired by AE86. The flat architecture of the boxer engine allows it to be mounted low, dropping the center of gravity downwards, resulting in sporty handling characteristics. The exterior design of 86 provides a slick drag coefficient of C d = 0.27 and inspired by Toyota 2000GT's low-to-the-ground profile and long, slender hood. The design cues translate to 86 in areas such as: trailing edge up from the door; finish up to the side-window; front and back ridge; circular taillights arranged in silver (single instead of double as in 2000GT).
According to the 86 designers, "The goal is to create a sports car with authentic rear wheel drive with attractive style, excellent performance and handling, flexible utility and stunning MPG." When asked about the TRD version of the car, Mr. Tada said, "There will definitely be more TRD-oriented variants, but all the parts that will be standard on the TRD model will suit you, Toyota 86 at this time so there's no need to wait."
Side badge 86 "boxer" appeared in all versions of Toyota and Scion cars, but not Wagon R Suzuki Wagon R Subaru BRZ. In addition to badging, the main difference between 86/GT86 and BRZ is the front grille and bumper bar. The rest, including 17-inch alloy wheels, is split.
To enhance its identity, the vehicle is also characterized by symbolic references and motives associated with the number 86 and Toyota's legacy:
- machine hole and stroke is 86mm x 86mm
- the exhaust tip diameter is also 86mm
- The side badge mentioned above represents the horizontal layout of the boxer machine and its crank motif is a 86-figure resembling a drifting car from above
- fine "T" motifs (for Toyota and representing the brand vintage logo) are present in T-mesh patterns from the front grille, the base of the door switch, the instrument panel, the meter, the triangular rear foglamp and the wheel covers.
Interior
The interior has a 2 2 seat configuration, which uses a low mounted front seat. The rear seats are folded down allowing increased storage space for larger items. Three interior variations exist, the FR-S and 86 basic models have a cloth seat with all the black interior trim that has a black dashboard trim, while the boot shift features a red stitch. BRZ has two interiors available, one identical to the FR-S but with a silver dash trim, red parking stitched parking brake, black gauge face (not a white tachometer of 86 GTS models) and a touch screen navigation head unit; upgraded second option for heated leather seats and Alcantara, automatic HVAC controls, and push-button start. The top-of-the-range 86 models are fitted like the BRZ except as mentioned above, and the Japanese interior can have black/red and Alcantara or full blacks and Alcantara (Australia only offered the latter).
Performance
- Highest speed: 145 mph (233 km/h) (as tested)
- Acceleration:
- 0-62Ã, mph (0-100 km/h): 7.6s (manufacturer's claim)
- 0-60 mph (0-97 km/h): 6.0-6,2 sec (estimated)
- Standing 1/4 Mile: 14.7-14.9s (estimated).

The engine power remains the same as the standard model although it features a variety of drivetrain changes such as a twin center exhaust, a mechanical LSD TRD, a shifter short, and improved settings for a six-speed manual transmission. Other changes include extra body strengthening, high-variable suspension coil-over buffer and more rigid suspension bushing. The TRD bodykit with carbonfibre component is equipped with 18 inch magnesium wheels and, overall, the 14R-60 model is lighter than the base model. Inside is a racing-style bucket seat with four-point belt, Alcantara steering wheel, carbonfibre dashboard trim, yellow piping, and spotlight. Specifically, in Jamaica and Nicaragua, 86 is marketed and sold using one of its pre-launch concept car badges, "FT-86".
Subaru BRZ
The name BRZ comes from three elements: the B oxer machine, R the ear-wheel drive, and Z that stand for zenit. The BRZ Subaru is different from the 86 design in front of the fascia, with different grille and lamp assembly, as well as different front fender vents. The BRZ grill is hexagonal, compared to the Toyota trapezoid. BRZ features LED LED parking cover covers in the headlight assembly, while daytime running lights are integrated into the bumper. Setting the suspension from Subaru is different from Toyota. Like the Toyota 86 Japan, Subaru offers a basic RA model that lacks interior comfort and uses a 16 inch steel wheel, with the only difference from the 86 RC is that the BRZ RA bumper is painted in the same color as the body. Two main trim levels are offered: R trim, known as the North American Premium, and S trim, known as Limited in North America. BRZ Europe and Australia offer Toyota stereo units, while Japanese and North American vehicles use Subaru units. BRZ Australia was initially available for sale only online.
In 2013, Subaru launched the BRZ tS model for the Japanese market, set by STI. The tS models are equipped with enhanced suspension settings, 18-inch silver BBS wheels, STI bodykits and front spoilers, larger drive shafts, and Brembo brakes, along with interior changes to include new steering wheels, front seats, gauges and Alcantara accents. In 2014, as part of the ongoing changes consistent with MY15 Toyota 86 GTS, Subaru BRZ also features new key fob and two new colors, including a 'WR Blue Pearl' metal touch. In addition, Subaru also launched a special edition for both the United States and Australia markets. For the first, a thousand BRZ series. The blue edition is marketed at an additional cost, half painted on Blue Pearl and the other half at Crystal Pearl White. This model features the body parts of the STI, STI 17 inch black rims and red brake calipers. For Australia, Subaru launched a similar variant known as Special Edition, also at an additional cost. It displays lines in bonnet, boot and roof; STI 17 inch black glaze; STI boot spoiler plus front, side and rear under spoiler; rear diffuser and push-button starter switch. It is available in every existing BRZ paint color.
In 2015, Subaru released a limited edition of Hyper Blue in all WRX, WRX STI, and BRZ models. In Australia, BRZ is limited to 50 units with manual transmission only. This limited edition is marked with blue paint and a number of other cosmetic enhancements.

Scion FR-S
Scion FR-S is exclusive to USA and Canada. The name comes from the platform description: F ront-engine, R ear-wheel drive, port S . Unlike all other 86 variants, the FR-S initially has no trim levels and all are offered with Scion's BeSpoke stereo system.
As part of the 10th anniversary of the Scion marque, 2,500 units of the "10 Series" FR-S model were released by Scion for the 2014 model year. They were painted with Silver Ignition and equipped with extra equipment, including HID headlamps, automatic climate control, start button, glowing exterior badge, and shifter button.
In January 2014, Scion released a 2000-unit edition of the "Monogram Series" FR-S that added additional features at special rates. In this case, the FR-S fits perfectly with the equipment offered on the BRZ (or Toyota GTS variant) with the following: heated leather and Alcantara seats; heated side mirrors; high intensity discharge headlights; dual zone climate control; BeSpoke audio and navigation. The price is US $ 27,400 and US $ 28,500 each, for manual or automatic transmission model. It is said that this limited edition represents a savings of US $ 1,900 with a separate pricing option.
Presented in the April 2014 New York Auto Show and reflecting the special edition of "Giallo" and "Limited Edition" special edition yellow-painted Europe, Scion released 1,500 units of "Release Series 1.0" with similar Yuzu Yellow paint.. Pemasaran
As part of the market launch of Subaru BRZ, a 2-part film documenting the development of manufactured vehicles. In Canada, a TV ad titled Scorched is produced by OMD, creatively from DDB. The execution is handled by DDB PR with Juxta Productions working on the interior. The ad was taken at Queen and McCaul St. in Toronto.
In Australia, Subaru BRZ is the first new car sold in the market exclusively online, with orders open on July 16, 2012. It is also marketed with a free service for 3 years or 60,000 km. According to Subaru the concept of this sale is a success, after all the 2012 Australian allocation of 201 cars sold in less than 3 hours. First buyers can secure their car in less than 20 minutes from the site being aired. This sales process is executed as a consequence of Toyota 86's supply demand far exceeding (generating long delivery times) and BRZ's low inventory for Australia. Starting January 1, 2014, vehicles become available both online and at dealerships, with free services no longer included in the purchase.
Scion made a similar decision in the United States, creating the '86 First 'program to allow 86 buyers to take their car delivery before the general public sale. On January 12, 2012 users have eight hours and six minutes to submit their request to the program website. Winners are required to take a confirmation number and $ 500 to the dealer within 96 hours to claim their car. Scion produced an ad called Close Calls which featured Ken Gushi avoiding a collision with a deer while driving Scion FR-S at Mt. Diablo State Park in Northern California.
The Toyota GT86 UK ad titled The Real Deal is prohibited as it encourages motorists to drive irresponsibly.
