Prior to the Blackest Night event, Black Hand (the "leader" and first member of the Black Lantern Corps) were designated criminals on the Green Lantern page. The author Geoff Johns reviewed his origins and extended certain aspects of it during the
When transported to prison, Black Hand experiences a sudden wave of power that kills his captors. Xander scours the desert, hears the voice instructing him to reclaim the soul of the revived character. Killing his family's hands and committing suicide. The Guardian Scar arrives, and creates the first black power ring, which revives the Black Hand. He reveals that the Hand is a physical manifestation of death, and functions as a Black Corps Lenter's avatar in the same way as Ion, Parallax, and Predator are for their strength, fear, and love. Hands then dug up Bruce Wayne's body, lifted his skull, and recited the Black Lantern vow for the first time. Soon after, the black power ring came down to the universe and began reviving the deceased as Black Lanterns who attacked the heroes of DC Universe. It is claimed Battery Power in the Space Sector 666. Black Hand is seen holding Wayne's skull in all future appearances, embracing it in a necrophiliac way in Blackest Night # 1 as a black power ring emerging from Black Power Battery, exclaimed that Wayne's death "plays a much bigger role in Blackest Night" than anyone thinks. At the end of the matter, it was shown that Black Hand used a skull to produce a new electric ring at will, creating two rings for the recently deceased Carter Hall and Kendra Saunders.
In Blackest Night # 3, Indigo-1 explains the premise behind the fictional Black Lantern Corps relationship with the universe. He explains that the darkness that existed before the creation of the universe is what gives power to the Black Lanterns. Dumped at dawn by the white light of creation, the struggle again causes white light to split into an emotional spectrum. Events that occur throughout the title of Blackest Night are the result of darkness, again, against creation. He went on to illustrate how the combination of all seven lights can restore the white light of creation and end the Black Lanterns. Throughout the Blackest Night event, each time Black Lantern successfully removes the heart of one of their victims, a lantern-shaped black speech balloon (used inside Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps to indicate that the electric ring is talking) illustrates an increasing power level with an increase of 0.1 percent. At Blackest Night # 4, the power meter is filled and Scar is able to transport Black Central Power Battery to Coast City, and the real mastermind behind the Black Lanterns can step into the main DC Universe. : Nekron.
After being introduced to the lead role in the Blackest Night event, Indigo-1 recruited Hal Jordan to assemble a team capable of re-creating the white light of creation (chosen for having a personal connection with the most powerful members) of the remaining five Corps ). The story that took place in Green Lantern depicts Jordan and Indigo-1 recruiting Carol Ferris, Sinestro, Saint Walker, Atrocitus, and Larfleeze for their purposes. At Blackest Night # 5, the team attacked the Black Central Power Battery with the opposite result intended. Nekron is reinforced and able to recruit life-alive characters that are revived from death to the Black Lantern Corps. Although seven Corps representatives sought to summon aid by recruiting temporary representatives until the rest of their Corps arrived - Ganthet joined the Green Lantern Corps, Scarecrow joined Sinestro Corps, Barry Allen joined Blue Lanterns, Atom joined the Indigo Tribe, Mera joined Red Lanterns, Lex Luthor was inducted into Orange Lanterns, and Wonder Woman was rescued from his Black Lantern identity to join Star Sapphires - they were almost thwarted when Nekron dug up the Entity, the first life in the universe, and attempted to kill it. After Sinestro tries and fails to join an entity similar to Hal's bond with Parallax - Sinestro moves the entity with his ego rather than his desire to survive - It takes control of the Entity himself, noting that the heroes still choose to live again even if Nekron gives them a chance. With this behind it, It integrates with the entity and frees the reanimated hero of Nekron continually, creating the White Lantern Corps in the process, and then revives Black Hand and the Anti-Monitor to deprive Nekron of its retarder in a living world and its respective resources. The White Lanterns used the power of White Light to finally defeat Nekron and Blackest Night's threats passed with the Black Lanterns crushed along with their power rings.
Rebirth of the Black Lantern Corps
Though it appears to be destroyed, the Black Lantern aspect returns in Firestorm when the undead human dark persona appears - claiming the name Deathstorm. Torturing both hosts of Firestorm Matrix, Deathstorm then goes to the White Lantern Power Battery where it damages it. While he originally intended to destroy it to kill all life in the universe, a voice came and ordered him not to do so. Instead, he ordered Deathstorm to make it a soldier in order to gain control over life itself. With those words said, White Lantern Power Battery along with Deathstorm creates undead Black Lanterns of twelve heroes and reanimated villains who have been reborn at the end of Blackest Night. After Deathstorm steals White Lantern, he, along with Firestorm, is transported to Qward in Anti-Matter Universe by Anti-Monitor, revealed to be behind the return of the twelve Black Lanterns. However, they are all ruined when Ronnie and Jason work together, allowing Ronnie's labor to be completed and returned to life by the White Entity.
What's New 52
After Black Hand's suicide to escape being inducted into the Indigo Tribe once more, the Black Power Ring emerges from his corpse, reviving it as Black Lantern once again, though this does not restart the Blackest Night probably because Nekron was imprisoned in the dead zone at that time. The Black Hand returns to Earth and revives his family and dies in graves around his home, but Hal Jordan and Sinestro are able to defeat this "zombie" by blowing up Sinestro's old yellow power battery. They do not realize that the Book of Black has declared that Hal Jordan will be the biggest "Black Lantern" out there.
When trapped in the Dead Zone (sphere between life and death) and seized his ring, Hal contemplates suicide because it's the only way to harness the power of the remaining Black Lantern ring and use it to escape from the Dead Zone and stop the First Lantern.
After seeing the inhabitants of Korugar entering the Dead Zone, Hal ends up making sacrifices and jumping off a cliff. It claims the power of the Black Hand ring and rises as the Black Lantern which in turn reduces the Black Hand body to dust. With the help of the Indigo Tribe, Hal escaped from the Dead Zone and used the Black Lanterns forces against the Volthoom, but the undead legions were easily destroyed. It then proceeds to summon Nekron who ultimately kills Volthoom. It then sends Nekron back to his grave in the Dead Zone when his green ring returns to him, returning him to life and membership at the Green Lantern Corps.
During the war between the New God and the various Lantern Corps, Black Hand revived various sources of Titans (including Relic) that were blocked inside the Source Wall as Black Lanterns. However, after Abuse of Life Equation from Highfather, they are fully resurrected.

At San Diego Comic Con 2009, Geoff Johns was able to discuss the reasons behind choosing Black Hand as the new Corps leader, the Black Lanterns character property, and his own goal in writing their portrayals. Commenting on the selected character to be revived during Blackest Night , Johns says:
The black ring is not about who died; The black ring is about who lives. So, scenes like Elongated Man and Sue Dibny take Hawkman and Hawkgirl is the beginning of the emotional and terror conflict you will see throughout the Blackest Night . So the black ring, again, is looking for the dead one that is important to our heroes.
During the creation of Blackest Night, Johns (not interested or frightened by zombies) wants to bring back dead characters in a way that looks horrible and emotionally disturbs the life character they encounter. To achieve that effect, Black Lanterns have a personality and are actively looking for those who will be affected by their performances. The prime example of using Johns personality distortion with Black Lanterns is the Elongated Man (usually described as a "lightweight" character who uses his detective skills to "kiss" when things go wrong) look at his victim and comment to the undead wife: "I smell the mystery." Johns identifies the power of Black Lanterns because it does not have to be evil, but it is not good either.
During the beginning of the creation of the new Corps, Johns drew from the information he collected about light while taking a physics class. With the emotional spectrum Corps inspiring life, he knows that this Corps needs to represent death. Black became the absence of light, he chose Black Hand as the leader of Corps both for the character's name and also because of how much he enjoyed pirating criminals while writing for Flash. Like other members of the Black Lantern Corps, Johns wants to take a different approach in his role as the Black Hand. While other criminals may have certain motivations, Hands are meant to be portrayed as clearly crazy characters and whose presence makes others uncomfortable.
In Blackest Night # 2, some black power rings seek to revive Don Hall's body, only to be prevented from interrupting his grave by an invisible barrier. When they collide with a barrier, the distinctive command of the ring ("up") is disrupted; the ring instead of responding: "Don Hall of Earth is peaceful." This is the first depiction of a black power ring that failed to recruit members for the Lantern Black Corps. In an interview with IGN, Johns explains behind Dove's immunity to black power rings: "You will learn more about this as we progress, but in fact it speaks to the nature of Don Hall.He can not be tarnished by people like this.He is untouchable in death and at total peace more than any other creature in the universe. "Reflecting on the limitations of the ring, Johns goes on to state that, although magic is a" joke "for black power rings (though the undead of Giovanni Zatara is able to hold black magic), Don just the opposite. Similarly, Blackest Night: Titans # 1 shows the Black Lantern Hank Hall unable to read Dawn Granger's emotions; his aura is described as a white color rather than the color of the emotional spectrum.
In Blackest Night: Batman # 1, Deadman's spirit can not prevent the black power circle reviving his body. Deadman tries to have his own body, but can not control it. During the panel of Blackest Night in San Diego Comic Con 2009, Geoff Johns was asked whether the revived Black Lantern's corpse speaks for itself or if they are controlled by outside forces. Johns refused to answer, implying that the question would be answered during the storyline's Blackest Night . Similarly, when being overcome by a black power ring, Spectre declares that he "will not be used." Prior to The Spectre's conversion, Black Hand made a note of the members of Shadowpact Zatanna and Blue Devil surrounded by an aura of life. After the Phantom Stranger scans, Black Hand stated that the Stranger was "not alive or dead", and noted him as a person interested in his Corps.

Although the exact list of former Green Lanterns revived by the black power ring does not exist, Kyle Rayner's rings state that all Green Lantern who died in Oan's basement at Green Lantern Corps vol. 2 # 39 converted into Black Lanterns.
Oath
Like other Lantern Corps, Black Hand composed vows for Black Lanterns:
Entity
While the Black Lantern Corps is supported by a black void of space that represents death and is therefore not included in the Emotional Spectrum, Black Hand is revealed to be a physical embodiment for this corps, in the same way that Ion is the embodiment of determination for the Green Lantern Corps. During the climax of Blackest Night # 8, Boston Brand told the Corps leaders that Black Hand is "tethering Nekron in our world", and that as an avatar of Death he is also the only key. to defeat Black Lanterns permanently. Using the White Lantern power of Life, Hal Jordan commands "William Hand of Earth - Live" , raises the Black Hand and removes it as the main power source of the Black Lantern Corps - the crippling and ultimately fatal blowing handle to the Black Lanterns.
The Black Book
Hidden inside the dome Oa is a black booklet known as "The Ultimate Facilitator of the Blackest Night". Written in a damaged blood by the Guardian of the Universe, Scar, a book of traitors, contains prophecy. Prophecy shows which Earth heroes have the ability to cope with the Black Night and ensure the survival or destruction of the universe.
Also in its pages is all the forbidden history of the Guardians of the Universe, and in an effort to protect its secrets, the naughty Guardian is forced to imprison the Sinestro Corps spokesman Lyssa Drak in the book. After the actual death of Scar and the end of Blackest Night, the Book of the Black was discovered by Ganthet, who noted it kept a lot of forbidden knowledge in its pages. He decides to keep it secret from other Guardians and entrust Guy Gardner with his secrets.
The book is then taken by the Krona who, after releasing Lyssa Drak from the Book, took him to the Dead Ryut Planet. There, after detecting the "New Guardian", he opens his page to reveal the history of the Krona. They were immediately attacked by the Book keeper, former member of Sinestro Corps Lyssa Drak. He was able to trap Sinestro himself, Carol Ferris, Indigo-1, Atrocitus, Saint Walker, and Larfleeze in the book. However, Sinestro was able to prevent him from catching Hal Jordan as well, by causing an explosion using the combined energy of their rings. The explosion of energy also affected the Book of the Black, which disappeared in the rainbow light, leaving only the rings of six trapped lanterns.
The book is then seen on Oa while it forces the Lanterns taken to revive their lives before obtaining their current ring. After the defeat of Krona and the liberation of the New Guardian, the Book was taken by Lyssa Drak. He is then confronted by now Green Lantern Sinestro who tracks him with the help of an alien hero who manipulates the energy he fought while in the Sinestro Corps. Contact with the Black Book reveals the Wali's plan to replace the Corps with the 'Third Army'.
Furthermore, the book goes back to Black's possession of possession as sought by the Guardians of the Universe. The book reveals to the Black Hand that Hal Jordan is not his enemy. When asked about it, it was revealed that Jordan would be the biggest Black Lantern. After the Black Hand was imprisoned in the Chamber of Shadows, the Black Book was taken by Green Lantern B'dg. However, the book sucks B'dg and Simon Baz into it and returns to the Black Hand.
Book prophecy was revealed to be true when Jordan turned into a Black Lantern as a means of escape from the Dead Zone. It then calls Nekron to defeat the First Lantern Volthoom. After his defeat, Hal was released from being Black Lantern and back alive as Green Lantern once more.
Power and capability
The Black Lanterns are the corpses revived by black power rings, which are driven by the force of death. Bodies are revived by black reconstructed ring rings if broken, keeping the body in working order at all times. Black power rings are able to regenerate fatal injuries suffered by users (including beheadings and complete dissolution). The rings produce black tendrils to "exterminate" themselves into the corpses, making it impossible to erase them with physical strength.
The first black power ring has no charge, but whenever Black Lantern kills a person and removes their heart,.01 percent of power is restored to every ring in the Corps. In Blackest Night # 3, Indigo-1 solidifies this theme by explaining that those who rise release emotions. Even at low power levels, black rings allow their users to fly and make black energy constructions. They are also not affected by magic. In the "classic" zombie mode, Black Lantern bites induce a slow-working necrosis that eventually turns the victim into a fellow Black Lantern. It is not known whether this power can work on any living thing, or only the characters that have been revived from previous deaths (such as Superman, Green Arrow, and Donna Troy).
Nekron uses Anti-Monitors as a physical resource inside the Black Power Battery. This is alluded to in some comics and "Origins and Omens" backstories that it is the Anti-Monitor wish to end humanity that makes it a prime candidate for battery power after the subsequent betrayal and murder in the hands of Superboy-Prime during Sinestro Corps War . In climax battles with all collective Lantern Corps, Anti-Monitor is virtually exempt from Power Battery and is revealed to only give up partly to the influence of Nekron (manifested by Black Hand visual symbol visible on every Black Lantern only half completed), demanding that he be released so he could take revenge on Nekron for his detention. As part of the 'coup de grace' final against the Black Lantern Corps, the Entity also ordered "Qward-Live Anti-Monitor" , which freed it from the Black Power Battery - crushing it in the process. It is a physical body Anti-Monitor, plus the presence of Black Hand as Death entity, which serves as a full source of power Black Lantern Corps.
Black Lanterns are able to read emotions as a colored aura that correlates with the emotional spectrum. Many emotions are read as multi-colored auras, while emotions can not be read out as white. In addition, the evil inhabitants and the underworld (like Etrigan) are read with a black aura, seemingly unreadable as white because of their dead nature. The state of deep dead animation is enough to fool Black Lantern by making dead animation targets invisible to Black Lantern's senses. An emotionless heart like Scarecrow makes its effect invisible to the Black Lantern. When facing a creature with a curved mental state, or a confused mind (such as Bizarro), the correlation between the detected emotion and the actual color that Black Lanterns see is reversed. In addition to the abilities given to them by the ring, Black Lanterns retain the super skills and powers they may have in life.
Vulnerability
Black Lanterns are vulnerable to white light and a combination of green light with other Corps lights.
After the black ring is destroyed, the corpse's body becomes inert.
Kimiyo Hoshi and Halo can destroy Black Lanterns completely by using their light-based power. Conner Kent uses the Medusa Mask to destroy the two Black Lanterns by forcing them to experience the full Emotional Spectrum, irritating their black power rings enough so that they escape from their bearers and escape. The Black Lanterns are also vulnerable to Lasso of Truth from Wonder Woman. Black Lantern's "touch", which is usually used to relieve the hearts of the victims and drain their emotional energy, can also break the link between Black Lanterns and their black rings. Barry Allen is able to disable the black ring that 'targets' him and Hal Jordan by using time travel, jumps two seconds into the future so that the ring will die when they can not feel the 'commissioned' user.
One of the common ways of stopping Black Lantern is to injure them faster than their ring that can regenerate their bodies (such as the plasma that Red Lantern spewed, the pitcher plants that mutated with strong digestive fluid, or great heat in the core of Mogo).
Other people who have proven resistant to the Black Lantern ring are those who have used the previous power ring or in general in other words a creature such as: Etrigan the Devil, who has no human heart and human emotion, Atrocitus, whose heart is replaced by his ring, Shade, which is truly immortal and thus can not die, and Osiris, whose magical nature allows him to control the ring. Don Hall (original Dove) is immune to recruitment into the Black Lantern Corps because he is "at peace" that destroys the Black Lantern Rings who are trying to recruit him.
Another vulnerability of their ring strength is that strange physics behind magical powers can dwarf their abilities, just as it does when the daughter of Arthur Serenity throws a protection spell that interferes with the effect of blackout her power ring.
Other versions
In the Flashpoint universe, William Hand's successful murder at Red Lantern, called Atrocitus, releases Nekron from prison long before several different colored Lantern Corps and the foretold "War of Light" have ever erupted in the universe. Shortly after being released, Nekron used his dark force to create the Black Lantern Corps using the Green Lanterns and countless other forms of life that had fallen before him.
As in the original DCU, Nekron led his Black Lanterns in an attempt to root out all life. To date, more than 200 Sectors under the jurisdiction of the Guardians of the Universe, except for those who have been vandalized by troopers of the soulless and rebel Manhunter army, have been systematically destroyed by Nekron and his troops. Of the remaining 2,793 sectors, at least half of them have been attacked by The Black Lantern Corps.
What's New 52: Futures End
In the future possibility of Futures End is set five years.
- The krona is revived as a Black Lantern and leads his Black Lantern against Hal Jordan and Relic.
- Sinestro destroys Lyssa Drak's skull on a land that summons the Black Lantern Power Ring and Sinestro use it to revive its Corps as Black Lanterns.
In other media
Television
- In Green Lantern: The Animated Series , the clothes section of Aya's body turns black after Aya takes over the Anti-Monitor body. The agenda, while initially, is to remove all the emotions of the universe, eventually changing to destroy organic life (by manipulating the Big Bang) and filling the universe with self-replicating machines instead. This possibility is an allusion to the Black Lantern Corps even though no symbols have changed from the usual Green Lantern form. Also when the heroes investigate Scar's room for clues, the Black Book with the Corps symbol is visible on the shelf.
Video Games
- In Injustice 2 , the Lantern Black Corps is represented by two Palette Hal Jordan "Death" palettes. The Black Lantern coat also appears on special body armor for Green Lantern.
