Commercialization
Spend the day with Thomas
"Day out with Thomas", is the name of the marketing used by HiT Entertainment for a special event held at the UK Heritage railway. Characteristics of this event include locomotives that use 'face' to resemble the character 'Thomas', and the character "Fat Controller", usually done by one of the train volunteers. The general idea is that people have the opportunity to take the train drawn by 'Thomas' or one of his friends.
In the US, this name also refers to "Come Ride the Rails with Thomas" which is a US tour with a real train that mimics Thomas the Tank Engine. The Thomas machine visiting historic railroads across the United States allows visitors to play games, meet Sir Topham Hatt and ride on passenger cars drawn by machines. HiT Entertainment is sponsoring an event to promote the Thomas and Friends brand.
In the Netherlands there is also "Day out with Thomas", Een dag uit met Thomas , and held at South Limburg Railway Compagny an inheritance train at Simpelveld in the South of Netherlands in Limburg province. The locomotive Thomas is sent from the UK. The South Limburg Railway Compagny has its own Diesel locomotive.
Amusement park
From 2007 to 2017, Drusilla Park near Alfriston, Sussex, England opened a train journey featuring Thomas, Annie, and Clarabel. The track crosses Zoo Park and also features James, Diesel, Cranky, and Fat Controller.
Since 2007, several Six Flags amusement parks in the US have included Thomas and Themed attractions: Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, Six Flags New England, Six Flags Magic Mountain, Six Flags Over Georgia, and Six Flags America. But by the end of 2010, Six Flags started the process of eliminating the Non-Warner Bros. license. from tourist attractions, including Thomas and Friends. Some of these attractions have been renamed and re-themes.
On March 15, 2008, Drayton Manor in England opened their own Thomas Land like the Japanese Amusement Park which attracts 1.7 million fans each year. Thomas Land at Drayton Manor is in the former Robinsons Land.
For 2008 & amp; The 2009 season, Dutch Wonderland in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA, featured the production of 'Thomas and Friends Live'.
Merchandise
Various merchandise has been produced to monetize the success of this series. The most popular and widespread item of merchandise is the character model, which has been produced in various ranges, some including the accompanying rail system. Other popular products include videos, books and magazines, and computer games. Thomas merchandise also includes items such as audiobooks, yearbooks, coloring books and activities, puzzles, board games, stationery, photo books, clothing, tableware, households such as curtains, duvet covers and lampshades, and even soft drinks and spaghetti.
Toy
With the popularity of Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends TV series among children, Thomas-based merchandise has proven to be very profitable. There are at least five different categories of trains and tracks: "Take Along Thomas" with a gray track; Trackmaster-operated track machine with brown track (formerly Tomy with blue track); Brio wood type machine with wooden and road rail (by ELC and others); electric model trains (produced in OO gauges by Hornby and Bachmann, N gauge by Tomix, O gauge by Lionel, and (from 2010) G-scale from Bachmann); and Lego machines and tracks. Merit Toys also produced several large-scale battery-powered machines with carriages and carriages in the 1980s, which ran on the red line. Complementary videos, DVDs, books, games, puzzles, stationery, clothing and household items have also been produced.
From 2015, the "Minis" and "My First Thomas" ranges begin
In January 1987, a number of Thomas toys were recalled after the test found the lead content in the paint to 90 times the permitted level legally. The toys were imported by ERTL (UK) from China.
Heritage rail
HiT Entertainment, which acquired Gullane Entertainment, was formerly Britt Allcroft Company, licensing "Day out with Thomas" events around the world, where visitors of inherited railways can meet and ride trains transported with replicas of "Thomas".
Since none of the E2 Class that survived became preservation, various other classes have been adapted to resemble Thomas. Replicas are based on alternative 0-6-0 format engines such as Hunslet Savings 0-6-0ST number 3781, which is changed from the saddle-tank to the side tank design by the Mid-Hants Train-builder to make No. 1 "Thomas" in 1994. The Strasburg Rail Road in Lancaster, PA (USA) was built and featured their No. 1 "Thomas" since 1999 in the US and announced the introduction of "Percy, Small Engine" in "Day Out" With Thomas " event on September 13, 2014.
Due to increased licensing fees and many other restrictions imposed by HiT Entertainment, including the need for "Sir Topham Hatts" to conduct auditions and requirements for an intensive Criminal Bureau's examination, many railways in the UK and abroad have reluctantly decided to withdraw from the run "Thomas" days, thereby reducing the flow of income to these organizations.
An international tour featuring Thomas and his driver was completed in 2005 in honor of the 60th anniversary of the original story. Former US President George H.W. Bush dedicated the President's Train during the 2005 ceremony.
An "original" Thomas was used in a special drama, The Queen's Handbag , staged to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II, starring well-loved characters from children's literature. In the drama, the body-sized Thomas took Sophie Dahl to the stage to meet Sir Topham Hatt (Jonathan Ross) early in the show.
Reception
Popularity with an autistic audience
In June and July 2001, the National Autistic Society surveyed 81 parents of children with autism and Asperger's syndrome to investigate their 'special relationship' with Thomas the Tank Engine. The survey confirmed the organizational assumptions of anecdotal evidence that children with autism spectrum disorders correlate much more strongly with Thomas the Tank Engine than with other children's characters.
In a April 2007 survey of the National Autistic Society, conducted with 748 UK elderly children under 10 with autism, 58% of parents reported that Thomas was the first child character to be enjoyed by their children, with about one-third of parents reporting child- their children can learn the basic facial expression of the characters, because all of Thomas's friends have an easy-to-read expression. 54% of parents reported that the stories contributed to their child's sense of security.
