HP EliteBook is a premium business-class notebook and mobile workstation made by Hewlett-Packard. The EliteBook series, which corresponds to the lower-end ProBook series, was introduced in August 2008. The Elitebook brand includes a mobile workstation until September 2013, when the brand was branded as the new HP ZBook. The EliteBook mainly competes with computers like Acer TravelMate, Dell Latitude, Lenovo ThinkPad and Toshiba PortÃÆ'Â © gÃÆ' © and Tecra.

The HP EliteBook line is engineered to meet MIL-STD-810 military standards for reliability and performance under extreme conditions, ie for temperature, altitude, humidity, dust, shock, and vibration. This notebook has a magnesium alloy chassis, anodized aluminum cover and palm rest, spill-resistant keyboard, active hard-drive protection and multiple pointing devices (touchpad and pointer). The previous EliteBook model featured HP Night Light keyboard lights (similar to ThinkLight found on many ThinkPads), while in the next generation HP has added backlit keyboard options to some 15 "and 17" workstation models. Select models have SSD storage options.

The EliteBooks generation is currently announced on 2 December 2014, with a refresher to the 800 series models as well as the new 700 series. An additional AMD-based model was announced on September 29, 2015.

Intel-based models are refreshed with the fifth and sixth generation of Core i (Broadwell) and processor series (Skylake), while AMD-based models use Carrizo processors based on the Excavator microarchitecture.
Previous model
The first generation of EliteBooks is the xx30 series. Prior to that, the HP p- and w-class ( professional and workstations , respectively) were not labeled as EliteBooks, nor did EliteBooks' typical anodized aluminum styling.

The xx40 series brings several changes and new features, including upgrades to Intel Core i5 and Core i7 processors and DDR3 SDRAM, new semi-chiclet keyboard and 14.0 "and 15.6" switch models from 16:10 to 16: 9 displays. HP also added DisplayPort and USB 3.0 ports. Appearance-wise, the workstation model changed to "gunmetal" dark finish while the non-workstation model retains the bright "silver" finish.
Models with quad-core CPUs support up to 32 GB of RAM. Workstation models can be configured with ISV certified ISV certified professional cards such as ATI FirePro M7820 or Nvidia Quadro FX 5000M (at the time of release of the most powerful workstation class graphics card on the market and exclusive to EliteBook 8740w).
Third generation

The xx60 series features second generation Intel Core i series processors, integrated Sandy Bridge or discrete AMD Radeon HD 6470M discrete graphics and chiclet-style keyboard. All models except 2760p use 16: 9 display. Mobile workstation model featuring Nvidia Quadro or AMD FirePro graphics. The notebook is also completely redesigned, with a more boxy shape and less plastic used on the surface, as well as a larger glass touchpad. The dual access panel at the bottom of the notebook is replaced with a single panel that allows access to all internal components.
The 8460p model is claimed to have a battery life of over 32 hours using an external ultra capacity battery.
Fourth generation

The xx70 series is mostly an additional update to the previous xx60 series, updated with Intel Ivy Bridge processors and new integrated and discrete graphics processors. New additions to EliteBook family include ultrabook Folio 9470m 11.6 "2170p and 14.0".
Fifth generation
The fifth generation EliteBooks was announced on October 1, 2013. The additional AMD-based model was announced on June 4, 2014, and the Intel Core M 1010 based Folio M on December 2, 2014.

The series brings changes to the nomenclature, with most model names consisting of only three digits. Furthermore, the workstation model is divided into separate brands, HP ZBook.
Internally, laptops are refreshed with the fourth generation Intel Core i (Haswell) processor (for 8xx, Folio and Revolve models), and new integrated and discrete graphics processors. The external design is also refreshed, resulting in a less square shape and a whole thinner chassis. Some models have touch screen options.
For the first time, HP added an AMD-based model to the EliteBook lineup, using AMD Kaveri APU. Previously only the bottom-class ProBook line featuring AMD processors.
Reception
The Elitebook HP line has been positively received, with PC Mag giving the 6930p notebook four out of five star reviews, noting its performance in all computing, but giving higher praise to the Thinkpad T400. The 2730p Tablet PC is well received by GottaBeMobile, but notes the lack of speakers, buttons and hooks. Notebook Reviews call the 8530w mobile workstation "one of the most impressive 15.4" notebooks in the workstation class, and Desktop Engineering found that, "In terms of price, performance, and portability, the HP EliteBook 8530w is a winner."
Geek.com commented: "In short, you can not go wrong with the EliteBook 8540p (or 8xx0 series for that matter).With this line of business, HP has combined handsome, rugged, high performance, and many features into a very exciting package. "The IT reviews say that 8540p" relatively high screen resolution is a real draw, and we found a well-made and easy-to-use keyboard at full touch-typing speeds. " However, the site also notes that "it's big and heavy and not designed for portability, and the price is also expensive."
The EliteBook 8440p received praise from V3.co.uk for its "exciting and powerful design" as well as "powerful processors" and "nice features," but reviews also note that the overall attractiveness of laptops is reduced by "bad battery life" and a 32-bit HP Windows option.
An overview by AnandTech gives a high score to the HP EliteBook 8740w with DreamColor 2 LCD, but notes a fairly high price tag on a built-to-order machine.
