Joseph "Joe" Rohde is a veteran executive at Walt Disney Imagineering, a division of The Walt Disney Company that designed and built Disney theme parks and resort hotels. Rohde's official title is Executive Designer and Vice President, Creative.
He was born in Sacramento, California and raised in Hawaii. He graduated from Chaminade College Preparatory, Canoga Park, California, in 1973, where he starred in the production of a student drama and was a Salutatorian class. Rohde received a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from Occidental College in Los Angeles.
Rohde's trademark is a large collection of earrings he wears on his left ear, all of which are souvenirs from decades of travel to remote parts of the world. This tradition begins when he puts a 5-year warning pin into his ear.

Careers at Walt Disney Imagineering
Rohde is the principal designer of the Disney Animal Kingdom, one of four theme parks at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, and the ultimate creative force behind the Expedition Everest recreational vehicle, which debuted in 2006. He is one of the main designers behind Club Properties Aulani's Disney Vacation at O? Ahu, Hawaii. He was chosen for the role because of his experience with the Island and its native population, grew up in Hawaii.
Rohde joined Imagineering in 1980 during the development of Epcot as a designer of beautiful models and painters for the Mexican entertainment park pavilion. He later worked as a designer on Fantasyland's improvements at Disneyland, Captain EO 3-D movie starring Michael Jackson singer, the Norwegian pavilion at Epcot and Adventurers Club, a 1930s themed bar and lounge that opened in the year 1989 at the Pleasure Island entertainment area at Walt Disney World Resort.
Rohde was featured in the April 2006 Travel Channel documentary entitled Everest Expedition: Journey to Sacred Lands . The program was produced by Discovery Networks during an expedition to China and Nepal in 2005 called the Himalayan Mission. This track is sponsored by Discovery, Disney, and Conservation International to promote the attractions of the Everest Expedition theme park and conduct scientific research and cultural research in remote areas of the Himalayas. Rohde acted as a model for Harrison Hightower, owner of the fictional "Hightower Hotel" which became the attraction of the Terror Tower at Tokyo DisneySea outside Tokyo, Japan.
After designing Aulani in Hawaii Rohde was assigned to create Pandora - The World of Avatar in the Disney Animal Kingdom. The project took six years to complete and was opened in May 2017.
Recently, Rohde led a team that transformed the former Tower of Terror at Disney California Adventure into Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: Breakout !. The attraction opened in May 2017. This new project is part of an expansion of its role as a global creative leader of Marvel properties.
