Description

The R11s are numbered 8010-8019.

Because each cost more than $ 100,000, R11 is often referred to as the Million Dollar Train. From 1964 to 1965, ten R11s were overhauled at the Transit Authority's Coney Island Complex under contract R34 . Therefore, it is also acceptable to refer to cars as R34, provided that someone refers to them in a post-overhaul country.

R11 is the first R-type stainless steel car ever made (Budd BMT Zephyr holds the title as the first stainless steel subway car in town). Fifteen years after the construction of the R11s, Budd Company built the first mass order of stainless steel cars in the history of Subway New York City, R32.

The decorative design of the car body features a standee windows separated by a thick clamp from the bottom window. This was due to the influence of renowned industrial designer Otto Kuhler (US patent Des.153, 367), and was featured as part of an offer by the American Car and Foundry Company in 1947. Cars also applied new technologies in some areas. The "Precipitron" lamp is inserted, designed to combat bacteria in the air. Forced air ventilation was introduced as a ventilation of the ceiling of fresh air circulation in the outside of each car, while removing the air is musty. Electric door motors are used for the first time, replacing standard air powered door motors that have been used on many older equipment. However, these cars are also built with an outside operation tool or control gear, along with a Public Address microphone system mounted on the outside. Finally, drum brakes are installed instead of conventional brake footprint. There is no R34

History

â € <â €

On June 19, 1947, the city announced details of the $ 1,118,000 R11 subway order. Equipment on the subway is installed by Westinghouse Electric.

The full size of the R11 contract is 400 new subway cars, intended to provide services on the planned Second Avenue Subway, which are repeatedly postponed until January 1, 2017. The subway, which is then scheduled to open in the 1950s, has been repeated delayed times throughout its history, and 10 cars booked should be used as the prototype of the latest technology trials available at the time. However, the rest of the car was never built due to the halt construction on Second Avenue shortly thereafter.

Modify & amp; Reshuffle

R11 initially used a storm door similar to that used in later SMEE cars, but in the early 1950s, the storm doors were modified to show a circular window similar to those on R15, R16, and R17 cars.

R11s were rebuilt in 1965 under the R34 contract. During rebuilding, the drum brakes are replaced with disc brakes, new fans are installed, and the centerpiece is removed to increase passenger flow. Reconstruction also includes modifications that allow cars to operate with other SMEE cars (contract R10 via R42).

Retirement

Although it has been rebuilt, car maintenance proved to be time consuming and difficult in the 1970s, as special skills and components are required to keep the car functioning. Since there were only ten R11s, the cars retired from service in 1977 after an accident in the yard that destroyed the 8016 car. In 1980, nine of the ten cars were canceled.

The 8013 car has been preserved by the New York Transit Museum. It was also damaged in an accident in the yard that destroyed the 8016 car, but it was repaired before it was sent to the museum. The car was restored to operational status in 2013-2014 and has operated in a sponsored New York City Transit Museum since August 2014, especially at Train Many Metals ( TOMM ). On July 30, 2017, the car was first run on the Second Avenue Subway with existing TOMM , making full round trips on the Q route, between 96th Street and Coney Island- Stillwell Avenue.
