Hardware
Surface Pro 3 has a body made of magnesium alloy that gives a gray finish to the back of the device. The magnetic charge port and connect securely to the charger.
It comes with an enhanced continuous kickstand, allowing the device to be set at any angle between 22 and 150 degrees. The kicks have a high resistance that gives you firmness and prevents unintentional gliding.
Surface Pro 3 has a larger 12 inch screen (30Ã,® cm) (display area of ​​25.4cm x 16.9cm) above its predecessor. The screen has a 3: 2 aspect ratio that Microsoft claims allows the device to be used more conveniently in portrait orientation. Since the touch screen digitizer and pen digitizer are combined into one layer, the screen is physically thinner than one of the previous models, which improves the viewing angle.
Although Surface Pro 3 has a larger screen than its predecessor, it is thinner and lighter, weighing 100 grams (0.22 lb) less. Microsoft claims Surface Pro 3 is capable of up to 9 hours of web browsing.
Surface Pro 3 is built on 4th generation Intel Core processor with TPM chip for enterprise security. This includes USB 3.0 and Mini DisplayPort ports on the right, an audio jack on the left, and a hot swap microSD slot on the back of the device. The microSD slot supports memory cards up to 200 GB. The internal solid-state drive and system memory can not be upgraded by the user.
Connectivity of external display
Like its predecessor, Surface Pro 3 is capable of connecting up to three external displays. To connect a third screen, the 2-in-1 screen itself must be turned off.
The device itself has one Mini DisplayPort output and for connecting two external displays, one can also use the secondary Mini DisplayPort on docking station accessories (sold separately). To attach three (or fewer) displays, an aftermarket DisplayPort Transport Multi-Streaming hub may be used or a daisy chaining feature from a compatible display. Software
Surface Pro 3 was originally shipped with Windows 8.1 Pro, but since Windows 10 was released on July 29, 2015, the new device comes with preinstalled OS, eliminating the need to upgrade as it does on existing devices. The Windows 10 upgrade, among other features, presents the Tablet mode, which can be useful when the device is used as a tablet, without a keyboard attached.
Instant Go
Surface Pro 3 is one of the first 64-bit Windows devices to feature InstantGo (formerly Connected Standby ), allowing smartphone power management capabilities. This allows the Windows Store app to update info (such as email) when the device is off, and for the operating system to run automatic maintenance when connected to the AC. The surface will enter hibernation status after four hours of inactivity, to further conserve battery power.
With InstantGo active there is only one power plan available with limited options. InstantGo is not currently supported when Hyper-V is enabled, instead the device will enter hibernation every time it is put into sleep mode.
Accessories
The Surface-series device features a Type Cover accessory, attachable protective keyboard, sold separately, but has been continuously appearing on every Surface ad since the original Surface launch. Type Cover for Surface Pro 3 has a backlit button, is thinner and has an enhanced touchpad over its predecessor. It also has a magnetic strip that binds to the front bezel of the screen for additional stability. Magnetic strips can also be used to improve the position of the keyboard, which can help comfortably use the Type Cover in the lap.
Surface Pro 3 is the first Surface device featuring an enhanced Pen Surface version, which is included with each device. In contrast to that of the previous device from Pro line, which is based on Wacom technology, Surface Pen Surface Pro 3 featuring N-trig DuoSense technology with 256 levels of pressure sensitivity.
Microsoft also offers a docking station, which adds five USB ports (including three USB 3.0), Gigabit Ethernet ports, an additional Mini DisplayPort (which can be used along with ports on Surface Pro 3) and 3.5 mm audio jack for audio input/output.
Some of Microsoft's wireless mouse touches are fixed to match the Surface-series device design, added where Bluetooth connectivity applies and relaunched as the Surface Edition Surface Edition series mouse: Arc Touch Mouse Surface Edition and Wedge Touch Mouse Surface Edition.
Reception
The Surface Pro 3 has received positive reviews. David Pogue advises "The result is that, with virtually no thickness or heavy penalties, kickstand and Type Cover lets you turn your 1.8 pound tablet into an actual, fast, and luxurious laptop." Pogue says that the Surface Pro 3 form factor works well as a tablet, in contrast to Surface Pro 2, which largely and severely limits its appeal as a tablet. Pogue also stated that the new multi-stage kickstand, 3: 2 screen aspect ratio and the new Type 3 coverboard make it a competent laptop.
It has been suggested that Surface Pro 3 is closest to the concept of Microsoft Tablet PC which company founder Bill Gates announced in 2001, becoming the first Surface to be a credible laptop replacement. Time magazines include Microsoft Surface Pro 3 in the list of 25 best discoveries of 2014.
Surface Pro 3 received a 1/10 improvement score from iFixit due to the use of strong adhesive materials throughout and difficulties in removing the screen.
