AMCO Batteries Limited is a car and commercial battery manufacturing company headquartered in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. It is part of the Rs.15,000-crore Amalgamations Group, one of India's largest light engineering groups in India. AMCO was founded by Becken Bain, a German citizen. the company later became part of the Amalgamations Group in 1955. AMCO began operating under the final upgrading of S Anantharamakrishnan. The company saw exponential growth and expansion under the leadership of the late Chairman, Dr. A. Sivasailam and Ms. Jayshree Venkataraman.

Currently the leading automotive battery manufacturer in the country. AMCO has become a trendsetter in introducing two-wheeled batteries in India and was the first company to launch two-wheeled polypropylene batteries in 1984-85. AMCO has been certified QS 9000: 1998, ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and TS16949 which is a testament to quality and high standards.

Milestones

1932

  • Manufacturing Company Accumulator Pvt. Ltd. founded by Mr. Becken Bain, a German citizen

1955

  • Purchased by AMALGAMATIONS Group that incurs fresh capital. Production began under the supervision of the late Mr Anantharamakrishnan with the late Mr. K.G. Parameswaran as M.D.

1964

  • Technical collaboration with M/s is signed. Gould Inc. The only battery company to make all the battery components at home includes containers and rubber separators
  • Started exports to Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union and became the largest battery exporter from India. AMCO was awarded the status of the Export House by the Government of India
  • AMCO is the First Indian Company to create a Light Car Train for the Railway. This is the initial production
  • In the late 1960s, a strategic shift to adding automotive batteries in product mixes was captured

1971

  • Foundations are laid out for modern factories in Hebbal, Bangalore

1974

  • On January 1st, commercial production began at Hebbal factory

1976

  • Export Battery Division begins at Hebbal factory to create traction battery for USSR

1980

  • AMCO celebrates Silver Yubilee and expands its business to contract manufacturing for MNC brands such as MICO, Crompton, etc.

  • Collaboration with YUASA Corporation
  • AMCO became the first battery company to supply batteries for all new generation vehicles Hero Honda Motors Ltd., Yamaha Motors India Pvt. Ltd., TVS Motor Company Ltd. and Bajaj Auto Ltd.

1985-86

  • AMCO added Maruti Udyog Ltd. with NS40 battery supply. The market moves to Poly Propylene batteries and AMCO starts supplying such batteries to OEMs including TAFE, Mahindra, TELCO, Ashok Leyland, etc.

1992

  • Export markets are becoming less attractive. AMCO shifts its focus to gain domestic market dominance for automotive batteries

1993

  • TAFE-Power Source Division was born, with manufacturing facilities at Maraimalai Nagar to enable AMCO to sell more batteries

1994-96

  • AMCO made the decision to become an automotive battery company, returning to the Group's core competencies in the automotive sector
  • First Battery Company to obtain ISO 9001 certification in 1994. Currently the company has been certified ISO 14001, QS9000 and now TS16949, ensuring the highest quality parameters

2004 Ã,

  • Share ways with YUASA Corporation, to come up with a bigger revival, higher dynamics, and better products. The growing fraternity of OE includes Honda Motor and Scooter India Ltd., LML, Kinetic Motors etc in the Two-Wheeler segment. In the Four-Wheeler segment, VST Tillers Ltd, SAS Motors (Manufacturers of Angad Tractors), Cummins India Ltd., Toyota Kirloskar Motor Ltd became OE's customers.

2005 and so on

  • The undisputed leader in the two-wheeled vehicle market, Ã, two of three new generation vehicles on the road have AMCO
  • Vendor Award Recipient from M/s. Honda Motor & amp; Scooter India Pvt Ltd., M/s. Hero Motocrop Ltd., M/s. Bajaj Auto Ltd, M/s.International Tractors Ltd., and M/s. Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd.

Amalgamations Group

The Amalgamations Group, founded in 1938 is an Indian business conglomerate based in Chennai. The Group has companies operating in various industries. The Group has interest in Manufacturing, Plantation, Trading & amp; Distribution and Service. This is one of the light engineering conglomerates in India. The group has 47 companies under the company that operates 50 factories. The most prominent corporate groups are Tractor and Farm Equipment Limited (Better known as TAFE), Simpsons & amp; Company, T Stanes & amp; Co, AMCO Battery, Higginbotham and Addisons Paints.

The history of this group traces back to 1935 when Mr. Sivasailam Anantharamakrishnan joined the Simpsons Group, the British South Indian business conglomerate, as Secretary in 1935. In 1938 he was one of three directors on the board when Simpsons formed a holding company. It was converted into a public limited company next year, which later became the Amalgamations Group in 1941. During 1940 Anantharamakrishnan led a rapid group expansion, although he became its chairman in 1953.

The Amalgamations Group after the acquisition of the 100-year-old Simpsons in 1941, began acquiring some of South's foremost reputable companies such as Higginbotham, Associated Printers, Associated Publishers, Addison & Co., SRVS, George Oakes, T. Stanes, The United Nilgiri Tea Estates and Stanes Amalgamated Estates. From 1950 onwards, the company's automotive component manufacturing group has supplied products to all major OEM suppliers, helping them in reducing dependence on imports. The Group companies have formed several alliances with international partners to improve their technological capabilities.
