Autolite or Auto-Lite is a brand of spark plug and set of American ignition wire. Autolite products are sold in the United States, Canada and Mexico, and by 2015 are now sold in Australia. Until 2011, the Autolite brand is part of the Honeywell Automotive Consumer Products Group, along with Fram and Prestone. Since then, it has been manufactured and marketed by FRAM Group IP LLC, which is Auckland's constituent company, New Zealand's investment rankings firm, Rank Group. Autolite has been the official NASCAR Busi since April 2000.

Histori

The origins of Autolite can be traced to 1911, when Electric Autolite is established. The company produces generators to turn on car headlights or buggy lights early in the day. In 1927, Electric Autolite acquired Perst-O-Lite Battery Company from The Union Carbide Corporation which produces automotive batteries. In 1935, Royce G. Martin, President of the Autolite Electric Company, decided that the company should enter the manufacturing spark plug business. Robert Twells, a ceramic engineer, leads the development team. A few months later, the company sold their first spark plugs. The Autolite Electric product is further expanded to include starter motors, generators, regulators, ignition systems, and wire and cable products. Autolite enjoys instant success, having gained supply contracts with leading car manufacturers such as Chrysler, Studebaker, Packard, and Willys.

In a 1940 promotional film, Autolite features a stop motion animation of its products that march through the Autolite factory to the Franz Schubert March Military. A shortened version of this sequence was then used in television commercials for Autolite, especially on the Autolite-sponsored CBS 1950s Suspense program. (Autolite has sponsored previous radio programs.) Announcer Harlow Wilcox changed the ad tagline "You're always right with Autolite!" became the national slogan.

In 1961, attempting to enter a profitable aftermarket auto parts business, Ford Motor Company acquired the Autolite trade name, Ohio spark plug manufacturer, Michigan battery facilities, limited distribution rights, and some employee services. Autolite products become the standard original factory equipment in Ford vehicles. A federal antitrust lawsuit filed against Ford, dragged through the rest of the 1960s, was finally decided in 1972 by the Supreme Court against Ford, and Ford was forced to sell its Autolite-related assets to Bendix Corporation in 1973.

In 1963, the portion of an Autolite company not acquired by Ford merged with Mergenthaler Linotype Company and Eltra Corporation was formed. Former Autolite Motor phase of the company becomes Motor Company and Prestolite Ignition, then Prestolite Electric. In 1973, the Bendix Company had purchased Fram and Autolite. In 1980, The Eltra Corporation was acquired by Allied Signal Corporation which became Honeywell in 1999. Bendix was acquired by the Allies in 1983, bringing the Autolite back to its original parent, Electric Autolite (Eltra) as part of Allied Signal (Honeywell). In 2011, Honeywell sold its automotive consumer product group to the Ranking Group, which established FRAM Group, LLC and several other companies to take over the operations and transfer of ownership of the trademarks it acquired.
