The Ford Expedition is a full-size SUV made by Ford Motor Company. Introduced for the 1997 model as Ford Bronco's successor, Expedition is the first mid-size Ford crossover sold with a four-door body. For the entire production period, Ford Expedition has been derived from the appropriate Ford F-150 generation in production, body division and mechanical components. The fourth-generation Ford expedition starts production for the 2018 model year. Similar to Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban configurations, Ford Expedition is sold on a regular basis and extended (Ford Expedition EL/Max); sold since 2007, the latter serving as a substitute for Ford Excursion.
Since 1997, the Lincoln division has been marketing the Ford Expedition as a Lincoln Navigator, the first full-size SUV sold by luxury car brands in North America (Expeditions never sold as Mercury). The third Ford vehicle to use the Expedition nameplate, full-size SUVs followed the 1992 Ed-Edward Bauer F-150 concept vehicle and the 1995 trim level package at Ford Explorer Sport two doors down.
Prior to 2009, Ford Expedition was assembled at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan (formerly home to Ford Bronco). After 2009, Ford Expedition was transferred to the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky.

First generation (1997-2002)
Known internally at Ford as UN93, the first generation expedition was developed under UN93 program 1993-1996, headed by chief engineer Dale Claudepierre at a cost of $ 1.3 billion USD. Initial planning began in 1991 parallel to the development of the PN96 F-Series, before the UN93 program was fully approved in 1993. Styling approval was completed in early 1993 (3 1/2 years before production in 1996) under the design head of Bob Aikins, with UN93 Design was frozen in September 1993, at 34 months before the start of production in July 1996.
The new full-size SUV was launched on May 9, 1996 and was launched on October 2, 1996 as a 1997 model. It replaced the old, two-door Ford Bronco. The XLT is the basic model. The Expedition features optional three rows of seats, first row seat captain seats, second seat captain seats available, leather seating surfaces, illuminated walking board, heated rearview mirror, power moon roof, dual zone climate control and Ford's Mach sound system audio with back of subwoofer. Many of these features are standardized on the Eddie Bauer version.
The expedition is available with a full four-wheel ControlTrac automatic controller with two-speed dual range BorgWarner 4406 transfer case and differential multi-disk center. Eddie Bauer's version can be selected with the Eddie Bauer Premier package covering Arizona beige monochromatic works or solid black paint with painted wheels and enhanced leather seats.
2002
No major changes to cosmetics or mechanics. Last year's model for UN93. This is also the last year model for XLT No Boundary and Eddie Bauer Premier trims. Second generation (2003-2006) Second generation >
The redesigned second generation expedition was developed under the code name of the U222 program from 1996 to 2002, under the heads of Ford vehicle technician Steve von Foerster and head of engineer John Krafcik from 1998 to 2002. The design work began in 1997, with a proposal by Tyler Blake was selected by management and frozen for production in 1999. UN93-body corpse was seen testing in 2000, with a full prototype run from late 2000. The new expedition was unveiled at the 2002 North American International Auto Show, in January. Launched in May 2002 for the 2003 model year and featuring a new four wheel drive suspension system, it became the first full-size sports car to use fully independent suspension.
The new independent rear suspension (IRS) is considered controversial by some people at the time of its introduction. The misconception is that pulling capabilities and off-road Expeditions will be reduced, compared to the rear axle of the previous generation. Nevertheless, the obstacle clearance under the body increases by half an inch, and up to two inches below the axle differential. The new suspension reduces the rear unsprung mass of 110 pounds, and allows for a full 9.4-inch (full-length) ride of the full suspension ride (how many wheels can travel up or down) enhances its ability to traverse uneven terrain to improve control and ride quality. The independent long-wheel drive suspension itself is a suspension version of a race made with the purpose found in off-road desert racing vehicles.
The pulling capacity increased by 800 pounds (363 kg) for a high pullout capacity of 8,900 pounds (4,037 kg) when equipped with the proper axle ratio and heavy duty trailer towing package. Load capacity increased to 1,614 pounds (732 kg). The expedition also obtained a full box hydroform frame giving a 70 percent increase in torsional rigidity.
Along with its high towing capabilities, the all-new steering, braking, and electronic systems help control expeditions and better long trailer maneuvers. Adaptive variable assist power rack-and-pinion steering was introduced along with the largest brake rotors in the current segment (13.5 inches in front, 13 inches behind) with brake calipers 100 percent stiffer than previous generation Expedition. The four-speed automatic 4R70W transmission accepts an all-new control software to allow the transmission to automatically adjust to towing demands, using new computer logic that recognizes load changes and road conditions.
Full-time ControlTrac four-wheel drive system remains available, with two double speed ranges of BorgWarner 4416 transfer case. The new transfer case features an updated smart central locking multi-disk modifier with front-to-back bias "bias" capabilities in Auto mode. A new dedicated microprocessor with newly added control software allows the system to detect different terrain and surface conditions to predict traction loss before it occurs. Two High modes are also reintroduced. Four-wheel electronic traction control is now available as an option, and simulated the front and rear differential keys.
Both engines feature piston skirts that are coated with a teflon-based friction reducing material, and are equipped with low-voltage low-consumption rings. In addition, the new fail-safe cooling mode provides protection even in the case of great cooling losses (such as leaking radiators). If a coolant loss occurs, the engine control unit turns off the fuel to an alternative cylinder to reduce the risk of engine damage due to overheating. The valve continues to operate, to pump cooling air through the cylinder. The cooling system is designed to maintain the ideal engine temperature even when it slopes 15 percent in the temperature of 46Ã, à ° C (115Ã, à ° F). Fuel supply systems that help reduce emissions evaporate by putting consistent pressure on fuel injectors through high pressure pumps.
Installation of a new active hydraulic engine was introduced to prevent the powertrain inducing vibrations into the chassis. By optimizing the engine holder, the engine block can act as a mass damper, absorbing chassis resonance, improving ride comfort.
The expedition passenger cabin is better sealed than ever, in an attempt to remove the annoying outside noise from reaching the occupants. The sound of wind, powertrain, road and vehicle body is reduced by improving the interior acoustics through a new silencer material, a total of 10 shear body insulation shear styles, heavier body sealing and panels, re-designed rubber door seals and extensive acoustic structural use of foam in upper B pillar, upper and lower D pillars and floor pan. The road noise is reduced by 2 decibels, the leakage of the air body is reduced by 56 percent, the probability of noise seal noise is reduced from 15 percent to less than 0.5 percent and the wind noise measured at 80 mph (130 km/h) is reduced from 35 sones to world class level 29 sones.
The Expedition also received a thoroughly redesigned exterior and interior cosmetics. The expedition featured a new front fascia, grille work, headlights, body trim, rear fascia, tail lights, and liftgate. The interior of fit and finish is enhanced with a new interior featuring a new dashboard, door panels, original aluminum trim, and plush carpets. The premium hollow leather seating surfaces are standard on the Eddie Bauer Expedition (optional on Expedition XLT ). The FX4 expedition displays all optional off-road Expedition equipment as standard equipment. The drag coefficient of expedition is 0.41 Cd.
The three-row seating is standard with all the third folding chairs manually. The owner no longer has to delete the third row for more storage. The third row can "disappear" to the floor. Power-assisted PowerFold folding-line seating of the third row is available as an optional addition. Available features include a CD-ROM-based navigation system on the dashboard, DVD-based rear entertainment systems, ultrasonic backyard/backup sensor assistance, electric moon roof, customizable power accelerator and brake pedal (introduced in the first generation Expedition), Gentex automatic dimming electrocromatic mirrors, flight departure indicator on the side mirrors, luxury seat captain seat second row, premium audiophile sound system with in-dash six-disc CD changer and rear subwoofer and four-wheel independent air-pneumatic suspension system.

Safety and security
Like the previous generation, an additional 2-pronged air-constraint (SRS) restraint system (SRS) with a two-way residency protection is standard on Expeditions. The double front SRS airbag now includes the Personal Safety System (PSS). PSS will adjust the use of airbags for the first driver and passenger and include occupant classification, seat position, accident severity, belt pretensioner, load limiter and seat belt use of buckle sensors.
An additional optional restrain system of 4 optional optional air bags (SRS) with 6-way residency protection is also available. The new air bag system includes a double-sided air side bag for head, upper body and rollover protection. SafetyCanopy will deploy along A, B and C-pillars to the vehicle belt. SafetyCanopy can keep expanding after being used for longer protection and replacing the double front side airbags displayed on the first generation Expedition.
Other features include intrusion-side door beams, security approach lights, SecuriLock with smart lock and immobilizer engine, BeltMinder, three-point safety belts for all row seats, post-shut off fuel pump shut-off, tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) and four-wheel, four-sensor, four-channel anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake power distribution (EBD) and emergency brake support (EBA). AdvanceTrac electronic stability control with traction control system was introduced as an optional addition. Electronic traction and stability mitigation systems will be expanded to include roll stability control (RSC) for the 2005 model year.
Change model year
2003
Before the 2003 model year ended, Ford updated the walking boards in Expeditions equipped with Eddie Bauer trim. Earlier on the model year, Eddie Bauer's model has received a standard black board. Toward the end of model year, Arizona board beige walks reintroduced to complement Arizona's beige body work that came standard on Eddie Bauer. Colored body running boards were previously offered on the first generation Expedition from 2000 to 2002.
2004
No major changes to cosmetics or mechanics. Eddie Bauer Premier's Expedition Model was reintroduced after the absence of the 2003 trim model. Monochromatic paint work with blackened headlamps and special wheels is standard on the Eddie Bauer Premier version. The new Expedition Model XLT Sport is added with a gray Dark Shadow exterior body trim. The FX4 trim level is renamed NBX .
2005
The expedition received a new roof rail that replaced the traditional sliding roof rack. The new high level of Limited trim level replaces the Eddie Bauer Premier model (although Eddie Bauer is still available) and features chrome accented rails, chrome-plated aluminum wheels, PowerFold power assisted funnel-edged mirrors and chrome-tipped exhausts. High levels of King Ranch trim level with Castano leather seating also introduced. The 4.6 liter Triton V8 engine was dropped for the 2005 model because the 5.4 liter Triton V8 is standard on all Expeditions and updated with 24-valve technology and variable valve timing. Along with the 2005 V8 engine update model, Expedition also received a significantly updated version of the 4R70W four-speed automatic transmission.
New four-speed automatic transmission, now called 4R75E, features fully electronic Smart Shift technology. Turbine speed sensor improves transmission control and provides the basis for fully electronic shift scheduling. The speed of the transmitting microprocessor is improved for better response and precision of the control system. Transmissions continue to learn, and will calculate the torque in the next gear and schedule the shift points based on Expedition performance projections in the next gear. For the 2005 model expedition, the 4R75E transmission was designed by a letter " B " on the manufacturer's compliance safety certification label, located on the door-side of the driver's door. For the 2006 model expedition, the 4R75E transmission is designated by the letter " Q ".
2006
No major changes to cosmetics or mechanics. Model last year for U222. Rear view mirror Gentex automatically updated. Two new exterior colors are added later in the model year. They are metallic Pewter metals and Dark Copper. The Medium Flint gray interior is also added to the Limited model later in the model year. Chrome-tipped exhaust is standard on the King Ranch model. 2006 will be the last year model for NBX trim. Ultrasonic rear park assist and SafetyCanopy side curtain airbags are offered as stand-alone options. The adjustable headrest is also added to the front seat to replace the one piece unit.
Russia ?????? - ??????? (Moscow-Chukotka) ground expedition
On April 12, 2006, three second-generation Ford Expedition full-size Eddie Bauer vehicles completed the 32-day ground expedition. It is a 28,000 mile (45,000 km) journey across North Asia and the Arctic Tundra. The six-member team consists of leaders, Alexey Mikhailov and Alexander Borodin, technical director, Andrey Rodionov, and professional off-road driver: Sergey Goryachev, Victor Parshikov, and Alexey Simakin. The route takes them across the permafrost and across the Arctic Circle twice. The visited landmarks include where American aviator Carl Ben Eielson disappeared, and the birthplace of Russian explorer Semyon Dezhnev. The northernmost point on the route is the latitude of 69 à °? North (Pevek). The easternmost point visited is the longitude line 169 à ° 40? West (Cape Dezhnev). The temperature reached -36 à ° C (-32 à ° F) and the team experienced whiteouts and a polar storm. It is estimated that 200 kg (440 pounds) of snow has been removed from each vehicle the next day.
In 2007 it introduced the third generation of Expeditions developed under the code name of the U324 program which is the latest version of the second generation Expedition. Most of the improvements are mechanical, and include refreshing re-designed metal and interior sheets with upgraded material The new long axis distance EL Expedition in (US only) and is called Max Expedition (only in Canada and Mexico) as a replacement for the discontinued Ford Excursion.
The highly tall, hydroformed-type hydraulic platform (chassis) is a modified version of the half-ton Ford P2 platform of the Ford F-150. The new T1 platform replaces the old U platform, and provides 10 percent more torsional rigidity than the U platform. The T1 incorporates a four-wheel drive offshore suspension system (first introduced in the second generation) with a redesigned suspension geometry and new all-new five-link rear suspension with a new rear-back control arm. Like the previous model years, the suspension system can be obtained with an adaptive adaptive spring-water spring.
Ford 6R75's new 6-speed automatic transmission with a double overdrive gear was introduced. Transmission features push-button overdrive lock-out, electronic shift scheduling, adaptive shift algorithm and mechatronic transmission control module (TCM) which will store adaptive shift data in maintaining the live memory (KAM). This is maintained from complete data loss in the event of a power failure (such as disconnecting the battery). If a power failure occurs, the mechatronic unit will only read the last stored data entry from the system memory, so the transmission does not have to completely re-examine the owner's driving style.
In addition, the Expedition is powered by the same 5.1 liter Triton V-8 internal combustion engine, with torque of 300Ã, hp (220Ã, kW) and 365Ã,à lbfÃ, à · ft (495 NÃ,Ãμm) from the previous generation. When properly equipped with a heavy duty trailer trailer the SUV can be towed up to 9,200 pounds (4,130 kg). Expeditions are classified in the Tier 2 environmental classification, Bin 5/ULEV 2 Ultra Emission Vehicle.
The off-road geometry figures for the approach, departure and ramp breakover angles are respectively 22 à °, 21 à ° and 18 à °. Ground clearance running minimum (lowest point) is 8.7 inches (220 mm). The underbody (overall) ground clearance is 9.1 inches (230 mm).
Selected full-time Automatic Control Trac four-wheel drive continues to be offered, and uses two-speed dual range BorgWarner 4417 transfer case with intelligent multi-disk locking center and intelligent "biasing ability". The four-wheel electronic traction control is a protective anti-skid plate under the standard and off-road car body is optional. The new default off-road program with throttle response calibration is added, and automatically activated when Four Lower mode (key) is selected. Expeditions can achieve 41.06: 1 off-road crawling ratios with a low distance ratio of 2.64: 1 and a 3.73: 1 rear axle ratio.
This SUV also experienced nip/tuck with some cosmetic enhancements, both inside and outside. The front end expedition now features three grille "hollow" Ford bars to complement the SUV truck that is close to the F-150 and Super Duty pickups. Diverse headlamps of complex new styles, side mirrors with updated LED departure indicators, more slender body work and redesigned tail lights are also added. The interior received a new dash with center centers like the F-150, center console, luxury row seats redesigned in luxury seats, door panels and interior trim.
To further reduce outside noise interference for quieter and more isolated ride comforts, the new SoundScreen laminated acoustic and solar windshields are added with laminated side window glass.
This new SUV was launched at the Houston Auto Show rather than at the North American International Auto Show, the Greater Los Angeles Auto Show where most of the new models are, as 20 percent of all Expedition sales are in Texas.. The third-generation expedition went on sale in August 2006. The first 2007 expedition launched from Ford's assembly line was donated by Ford to the Peter family of Jamaica, Queens, New York as part of the episode of the American Broadcasting Company series. > Extreme Makeover: Home Edition which aired May 7, 2006.
At the end of 2014, the third generation expedition of the U324 three-wheeled and remote expedition U354 Expedition EL/Max undergoes cosmetic and mechanical refreshment for the 2015 model year.

On February 18, 2014, Ford introduced a mid-cycle Expedition Refresh (U324) and EL Expedition (U354), dubbed U3242 and U3542, for the 2015 model year. The "2" signifies the second phase of U324 and U354. Debut was at the Dallas-Fort Worth Auto Show on February 19, 2014; because Texas (especially Dallas and Houston) is an important market. Despite a 27% decline in sales since 2008, Ford is committed to continue producing Expeditions. Ford started production on an updated Expedition (and the EL Expedition, which will continue to compete with Suburban and Yukon XL) around the first quarter of 2014 and put the 2015 model at the dealership in July 2014. Ford announced that three trim levels, XLT, Limited, and King Ranch, will continue to be offered along with the top of the new Platinum trim line. On 12 September 2013, (which is the same day that GM launched its next-generation SUV), Automobile Magazine posted a 2015 Expedition spy shot, showing reproduced exhaust, and a more upright front fascia that has a taller, wider grille appeared inspired by the F-150 and Ford F-Series Super Duty trucks.
Official photos released on February 18, 2014 reveal a new three-bar grille that looks like an aggressive armadillo, featuring a stacked bar which evokes a curved armor apparition on the back of an armadillo. All new thin headlamps are added, alongside an all-new front bumper with a larger lower air intake. The new bumper also comes with a lower chrome bar and twin LED fog lamps that flank the chrome bars. Brightwork added behind the liftgate; and the exhaust is repositioned straight, instead of making a 90 degree turn at the rear of the right rear wheel.
Expeditions remain body-on-frame (BOF), allowing SUVs to retain the basics of heavy-duty trucks to attract and transport needs. This full-sized SUV receives a 3.5-valve DOHC Ti-VCT EcoBoost V-6 engine equipped with an aluminum engine block, twin turbocharger, direct injection, and independent twin camshaft timings. The power output for the EcoBoost V-6 will be rated around 365 horsepower and 420Ã, lb-ft of torque, and will be the only engine featured, dropping the 5.4 liter V-8 available in the 2007-2014 model because Ford wants to making Expeditions more fuel-efficient. Despite the switch from V-8 to V-6, the Expedition did increase its MPG to 16 (city)/23 (highway) to 2WD and 15 (city)/21 (highway) to 4WD, but now on par with GM Large size SUV, which also offers the same MPG as Expedition. In addition to the new engine, Expedition accepts 6-speed 6R80 SelectShift smart manuatic gearbox with manual shift mode. The expedition is also equipped with electric powered servo powered steering and Pull-Drift Compensation (PDC) which detects crosswind and compensates for it.
The interior remains the same as the outgoing model, but with improved material and a revised pile center, which introduces the latest version of the 8 inch touch screen and telecommunication MyFord Touch system. Ignition push-to-start engine with intelligent access added and four-wheeled mode selector (for models with 4x4) revised and re-positioned. TowCommand rowing controls are re-positioned through the four-wheel mode selector, to give way for the revised audio and climate controls on the central pile.
New features for 2015 include an optional, revised four-wheel independent suspension system with intelligently controlled damping system (CCD) that changes the suspension settings constantly based on 46 parameters and offers comfort, normal, and sporting modes. Expedition is the first Ford vehicle in North America that has a continuously controlled damping. Other new optional features include blind-spot information systems (BLIS) with cross-traffic signals, and rear view cameras and applications for infotainment systems to assist with towing and off-road driving, all of which are standard in Platinum trim, seating and interior features include Brunello skin, red wine color with tuxedo-stripe accents and French stitching stitches, or black leather with Agate Gray accents.
The full-time automatic four-wheel drive system ControlTrac continues to be offered, but it has trio of new off-road electronic systems in the form of Hill Ascent Assist (HAA), Hill Descent Control HDC) and Ford Truck Apps (FTA). FTAs provide off-road orientation/geometry, 4x4 system status, and traction control system status in real-time. The four-wheel electronic traction control system (brake differential lock controller) is recalibrated to take into account the newer EcoBoost V-6 torque output and earlier torque delivery.
Kinerja EcoBoost
The 6,155 pound (3 ton) heavyweight tested, Expedition of 2015 Platinum with 3.5 EcoBoost V-6 and Full ControlTrac automatic controller that can be controlled from 0 to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds. Full size SUVs can clip 100 mph in 18.2 seconds, 110 mph in 24.3 seconds, and electronic security is limited to 113 mph. The expedition has a near-perfect 50:50 front: balanced rear weight distribution and center of gravity positioned at 28.5 inches.
Expedition Platinum averaged 39.2 mph in a 610 ft slalom run and drew 0.78 g in skidpad roadholding testing. High speed emergency braking from 70 mph to 0 (full stop) finishes at 170 ft. By comparison, the main Expedition rival took 10 feet longer, completing the same emergency brake test at 180 ft.
âââ ⬠<â ⬠<2016
For the 2016 model year, most of the features introduced from 2015 have been carried over. However, Expeditions began to add Ford's enhanced SYNC3 enhancement to its trim, as an optional feature on XLT and standard on Limited, King Ranch and Platinum. Limited added the Sony Premium Audio System as standard.
2017
In June 2016, Ford began selling its 2017 model year expedition, with no major changes being made and continues to be offered in XLT, Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum trim levels. This is the last year of Expedition and Expedition of third generation EL (U324) and (U354)
Fourth_generation_.282018.E2.80.93present.29 "> Fourth Generation (2018-present)
The fourth-generation expedition, known internally at Ford Motor Company as "U553", was unveiled on February 7, 2017 at the Dallas Cowboys training facility, Ford Center in Frisco, Texas, ahead of the Chicago Auto Show debut. Production The new expedition begins on September 25, 2017. The vehicle arrives at the dealership in November 2017.
The all-new expedition was developed secretly under the codename of the U553 program and featured a body-on-frame (BOF) architecture with lightweight high-strength construction materials consisting of boron and aluminum steels. The four-door body is built of aluminum-alloys, while the frame is constructed of boron steel. U553 will move to a new half-tonne T3 hydroformation platform, which is a modified version of a half-ton platform that supports the P552 2015 Ford F-150. The T3 platform will use the new four-wheel independent suspension system design. The updated powertrain system (engine and transmission) includes the Hybrid variant with its own proprietary parallel hybrid drive system to help improve fuel efficiency. The expedition will get a new 10-speed 10R80 Ford's "SelectShift" auto transmission that will feature an artificial gear shift, electronic range selection, manual shift mode, and control through rotary rotation on the center console. The next-generation Chief engineer Expedition is Jackie Marshall DiMarco, who is also the chief engineer for the next generation F-150 pickup.
The spy photographer was arrested early, the donkey ass test engineer U553 at the end of 2015, which uses a highly modified non-F-150 SuperCrew raw body raw above the production goal of the T3 chassis platform. By the end of 2016, spy photographers managed to take photos of the actual pre-production prototype of the U553, wearing the body of production intent on the production intent platform. The U553 Expedition's look and style is inspired by the U502 Explorers along with the P552 F-150 element, the vehicle that houses the new Expedition, and will have a more aerodynamic and efficient silhouette, with a glossy windscreen and a sloping roofline that will lead to a rear liftgate spoiler. The U553 C-Expedition Pillar will be more forward-looking, echoing the sophisticated C-pillar forward of the U502 Explorer introduced for 2011. In addition, the Expedition body will feature sculptured sides with character lines, similar to the U502 Explorer, as opposed to the slab side straight from the Expedition at this time. The front grille design and Expedition headlamp are inspired by the P552 F-150 facelifted, with the front bumper maintaining a design and appearance similar to its predecessor, the U324 Expedition, after its facelift. It also extends the standard size wheelbase with 3 inches and a length of 4 inches while lowering the height by one inch (losing 300 pounds in the process) to allow for more leg room and space.
The expedition (U553) will be one of the first vehicles in North America to use the new generation 3-generation High Speed ââ(SS3) class data bus. The electrical architecture of CAN-3 is similar to that of the human nervous system and allows various onboard microprocessors and electronic vehicle control systems to communicate or "talk" to each other via electronic data sent and received. With CAN-3 high speed, Expeditions can learn and react faster than ever.
The expedition will be available with a selectable four-wheel drive full automatic that directs torque through two-speed dual-distance transfer with a multi-disk central locking controller. Differential rear locks for new electronics will be available to add a 4x4 system. Both central and rear locking systems will be worked with a four-wheel electronic traction control (ETC), which simulates a front-latch differential with a differential "front brake latch". The off-road electronic assistance of the Bukit Descent Control (HDC) expedition and Hill Ascent Assist (HAA) will join the Medan Management System adapted from Ford Raptor. Terrain Management is able to work with 4L modes, such as the Ford Raptor, and has 7 (seven) drive modes to choose from, including Normal, Eco, Sport, Tow/Haul, Gravel/Snow, Mud/Ruts, and Sand. The four-wheel drive system has 3 (three) direct drive modes that include 2H, 4A, and 4L. The 4H mode has now been downgraded from choice, because the Terrain Management computer now controls the electronic center key of the four-wheel drive system. Terrain Management will use an electronic center key for the 50:50 front: split rear torque when in direct 4A drive mode, when Mud/Ruts or Sand mode is selected. 4L direct drive mode involves an electronic center key regardless of the selected off-road drive mode. The "tap to lock/unlock" button is located near the drive mode dial for the operation of the electronic rear lock.
Off-road geometry figures for approach, departure, and ramp breakover, slightly increased by 23.3 à °, 21.9 à °, and 21.4 à ° from obstacle clearance. Ground clearance minimum run (lowest point) increases by one full inch, from 8.7 to 9.8 inches.
The expedition (U553) is certified by the Society of Automotive Engineers' independent SAE J2807 towing standard to attract a maximum of 9,300 kg (4,218 kg or 4,65 ton) of brake trailers. The tow rating increased by 100 lbs over the previous generation and continues to be the highest buffer amongst full-size SUVs. The expedition will also feature a Pro Trailer Backup Assist, a semi-autonomous system that allows Expedition to reverse itself with combined trailers. The driver directs the system through the control buttons, while Expedition handles all rotational speed and backward limits.
Among the new features that have been incorporated into the fourth-generation Expedition include a 360-degree camera and parking assistance system that can make parking easier, along with optional safety features that will use camera and radar technology, and include automated braking, lane-carrying assistance, active shipping controls, and blind-spot monitors. In addition, there are two USB ports per line, four 12-volt outlets and a 120-volt household socket. Ford also partnered with Sling that allows twin-screen entertainment systems, as well as personal tablets on Wi-Fi vehicles, to watch cable TV content. Wi-Fi content can be used up to 10 devices and features Apple Car Play and Android Auto capabilities compatible with Ford SYNC3 and Ford Pass. There are also at least 40 different rooms and cup holders to allow items to be stored. A double panoramic vista sunroof is available as an optional feature.
The fourth-generation expedition will only be available in four trim levels because the King Ranch trim (from 2005-2017) was discontinued after the 2017 model. Top three trims, XLT, Limited and Platinum top-of-the-line, will be available to regular customers, while the fourth trim, XL, will only be exclusive to rental companies, corporate fleets, and government agencies, as they will not have as many features as the three trims mentioned earlier. The Expedition will still retain the unique eight-seater seating (standard) on all trims as before, with optional seven passenger seats. MSRP has been registered by Ford for the fourth generation Expedition will be higher than the previous generation, ranging from about $ 52,000 (US) to XLT and $ 63,000 (US) for Limited trim levels.
