Plot

Frank and Faye Riley, an elderly couple managing apartment buildings and cafes in the East Village, are threatened by nearby property developments. The development manager, Lacey, sends a criminal named Carlos and his gang of thugs to bribe the couple and their tenants to move on. When the tenants refused, Carlos and his criminals pounded on the door of Mason Baylor artist, intimidated the pregnant single mother, Marisa Esteval, and broke the box of Harry Noble's coffin. After Frank Riley refused to move, Carlos ruined the cafe.

This attack convinced three tenants to move. Mason's boyfriend, Pamela is tired of living in a miserable old building with a man whose artistic career does not exist. He dumps Mason, packs up and before leaving, advises Mason to stop being an artist and get a steady job. Riley's friends, Muriel and Sid Hogensin took Lacey's bribe and decided to move to a nursing home in New Jersey. Frank felt slightly betrayed by Hogensin for taking Lacey's money but they explained that the building did not feel like home anymore. They told Frank that maybe he and Faye should stay with them in a retirement home. With Faye's attack and dementia, Frank contemplates giving up.

The situation looked grim until the appearance of a pair of small space ships descended into Rileys's apartment that night, repairing many damaged items. They also repaired the damaged cafe, putting Frank and Faye back in business. The two aliens occupied the house in the warehouse at the top of the apartment building, and were dubbed "The Fix-Its" by the residents. Carlos again threatens the tenant once again, but Fix-Its lures him to the top of the building and to the shed where they scare him.

Faye and Marisa know that Fix "woman" is pregnant. After consuming a lot of metal and electrical objects, she gave birth to three Fix-Its babies, though one was born dead. Faye buried a dead baby in a flowerpot the next day, but then Harry dug, brought it back to his apartment, and managed to bring it back to life by dismantling his precious television. Frank and Faye see the business drive in the cafe from the demolition crew, while Fix-Its helps in the kitchen.

Mason and Marisa are getting closer. Marisa finds Mason's very fine painting, which makes Mason feel better about her art and does not give up. Baby Marisa will be born within 2 to 3 months. Her boyfriend, Hector, who is a musician and her baby father, came. Mason leaves Marisa and Hector alone, but when Mason returns, Hector is gone. Marisa explains that Hector and his band have found a solid show in Chicago for a good price. Mason wonders why Hector will go without him. Marisa confesses that she told Hector to go without her because their relationship is not going well. But apparently he also developed feelings for Mason. Mason has developed feelings for him as well.

With Carlos unable to prove the existence of Fix-Its that had thwarted their plans, Lacey was furious with the delay in evicting the tenant and moving to replace it. Desperate to see the work done and increasingly unstable, Carlos bursts into the basement of the building to sabotage the construction of pipes and electrical buildings, and severely damages the "father" machine in the process. After Harry kicked him out, the tenants found the missing Fix-It kids and went looking for them in the city while Faye stayed behind with the "mom" machine for fixing "daddy". When the "father" machine was repaired, Fix-It's now wary parents went to look for their offspring. After finding them with Harry, the engine family departs from the planet.

Bored with the delay, Kovacs subordinate Lacey, who is also an arsonist, attempted to burn the building in a "accidental fire" that was staged. Carlos finds his plan and angrily sabotages the burning to make the whole building explode, only to later discover that Faye is still inside the building. While Kovacs escapes, Carlos does not manage to try to pretend his son, Bobby, to make him leave, but manages to save him when the fire spreads. The tenants then returned to find the flaming apartment block collapsed, and Faye was loaded into the ambulance.

The next morning, the apartment block has become a burning junk. To Kovacs' scolding the construction crew, in honor of Harry, refused to continue because he sat sadly on the stairs. Harry was greeted by a mechanical family that night, who had recruited many other Fix-It for improvement. The next morning, the entire building has been restored smoothly to new conditions, forever ending Lacey's demolition plan and resulting in Kovacs termination. Mason and Marisa start a relationship, while Carlos tries to start a friendship with Riley, with Faye finally coming to accept her real son's death. A few years later, developments have been built, but this time flanking both sides of a small apartment building, with Frank's cafe now doing roaring trade as a result of new jobs being brought to the area.

Production

The main photography started in New York in August 1986, but the location guides started almost a year earlier. "Because the story calls for a single building in the middle of the ruins," producer Ronald Schwary explained, "we had to find a vacant lot with burning buildings around it.We finally settled on a real building on Road 8 between Avenues C and D in Lower East Side New York (the building no longer stands, and may be located on the current substation site of the current Housing Bureau, or building to the east, approximately 40Ã, Â ° 43? 27,33? N 73Ã, Â ° 58? 40,49? W ).
