Eric Marlon Bishop was born in Terrell, Texas on December 13, 1967. He was the son of Darrell Bishop (renamed Shahid Abdula after he converted to Islam), who sometimes worked as a stockbroker, and Louise Annette Talley Dixon. Shortly after his birth, Foxx was adopted and raised by his mother's adoptive mother, Esther Marie (Nelson), a domestic worker and a nursery operator, and Mark Talley, a yard worker. She has little contact with her biological parents, who are not part of her parenting. Foxx grew up in the black quarter of Terrell, which at that time was a racially segregated community. She often acknowledged the influence of her grandmother in her life as one of the biggest reasons for her success.
Foxx started playing the piano when he was five years old. She has a strict Baptist education, and as a teenager she is a part-time pianist and choral leader at New Hope Terrell Baptist Church. His natural talent for telling jokes is already evident as a third grader, when his teacher will use him as a reward: if the class behaves, Foxx will tell a joke. Foxx attended Terrell High School, where he received top marks and played basketball and football (as a quarterback). His ambition was to play for the Dallas Cowboys, and he was the first player in school history to pass over 1,000 yards. He also sings in a band called Leather and Lace. After finishing high school, Foxx received a scholarship to the International University of the United States, where he studied music and classical composition.
